Described herein are systems, methods, and software to manage private networks for computing elements. In one example, a computing element on a first local network communicates a request to a coordination service to join a private network. The computing element further receives communication information associated with other computing elements in the private network, wherein the communication information permits the computing element to communicate with other computing elements in the private network that connect to the internet using second local networks. The computing element further advertises the computing elements in the first local network as though the other computing elements are connected to the first local network.

Management of private networks over multiple local networks

Described herein are systems, methods, and software to manage domain name system (DNS) requests in a computing system. In one example, a computing system identifies a DNS request from an application on the computing system and, in response to the request, identifies a DNS server to support the DNS request from a plurality of DNS servers based on a domain in the DNS request. The computing system further forwards the DNS request to the DNS server, wherein the DNS server is located on the computing system, obtains a response to the DNS request from the DNS server, wherein the response indicates a private internet protocol (IP) address in a private network subnet, and provides the response to the application.

Management of domain name system (DNS) queries in computing systems

Described herein are systems, methods, and software to manage nameservers for domain name system (DNS) requests. In one implementation, a computing element receives a domain name system (DNS) configuration from a coordination service that includes a plurality of rules. The computing element identifies an operating system configuration on the computing element and maps each of the rules to local rule implementations on the computing element based on the operating system configuration. Once the local rule implementations are identified, the computing element applies the local rule implementations on the computing element.

Management of domain name services across multiple device and software configurations

Systems and methods for managing alarms in an electrical power system employ intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) equipped with alarm arbitration capability. This capability allows an IED to aggregate alarms from multiple other IEDs relating to the same event or overlapping alarm events and provide one report about the event to a monitor and control system. In some embodiments, the alarm arbitration is performed based on IED power levels, that the IED having the highest power level is designated as the owner of the alarm event for alarm reporting purposes. Such an arrangement allows one IED to send a single report to the monitor and control system instead of potentially dozens of individual reports being sent by potentially dozens of IEDs for the same event or overlapping alarm events.

A monitoring device is in communication with a computer, including a memory, over a first network. The computer is further in communication with a server over a second network. A method for providing device information from the monitoring device to the server includes accessing a device web page stored on the monitoring device using a browser application operating on the computer. The monitoring device measures a utility characteristic and stores data indicative of the utility characteristic on a memory. The method further includes receiving a file from the monitoring device, including the device information. The device information includes at least device model information that identifies a model or type of the monitoring device. The method further includes storing the file in the memory of the computer, accessing a server web page stored on the server using the browser application operating on the computer, and transmitting the file to the server.

The IED may be configured to communicate using the network management protocol of the network management system. IED variables may be mapped to associated network management protocol variables to allow the network management system to access the IED variables using the network management protocol.

An electrical power monitoring system includes a proxy server between (1) monitoring devices coupled to an electrical power distribution system for sensing and storing data representing operating characteristics of the power distribution system, and (2) at least one client device coupled to the monitoring devices for requesting data from the monitoring device and processing, storing and presenting data received from the monitoring devices. A communications network is coupled to the monitoring and client devices, and proxy server is coupled to the communications network for processing and transforming messages and context-specific caching. The proxy server receives messages from the client device as a virtual device, processes the messages, and alters the messages before communicating the messages to the monitoring devices to which the messages are directed, or defers communication of at least portions of the messages to the actual monitoring devices to which the requests are directed until a later time.

One aspect of the present disclosure is directed to a method of managing information in a utility monitoring system that includes a host computer and an array of monitoring devices operatively coupled together on a peer-to-peer network. The array of monitoring devices includes first and second monitoring devices each with a respective memory. The first and second monitoring devices are configured to receive and transmit data. The method includes: storing data received by the first monitoring device in the first memory; storing data received by the second monitoring device in the second memory; responsive to the first memory being below a threshold storage capacity, transferring data received by the second monitoring device to the first monitoring device; and storing the transferred data in the first memory.
