A shaft coupler having first and second spindles adapted to be secured to a first and second output shafts of first and second motors, respectively. A locker ring is assembled to the first spindle, and a locker carrier is assembled to the second spindle. A coil is carried by the locker carrier and switches between an energized state wherein the coil shifts the locker ring to slide into engagement with the second spindle to lock the first and second output shafts together, and a deenergized state wherein a spring biases the locker ring out of engagement with the second spindle to unlock the first and second output shafts from each other. A first set of locking teeth are disengaged from a second set of locking teeth when the coil is deenergized, and are engaged when the coil is energized.

Dual motor power unit shaft coupler

A differential includes a disconnect feature. When in a disengaged state, the drive gear is decoupled from the differential carrier. As a result, the portions of the powertrain that would provide propulsion through the differential may be stationary and parasitic drag is decreased. The differential is transitioned into an engaged state by providing electrical current in a solenoid coil fixed to the housing. A solenoid piston acts through a thrust bearing to slide a sleeve, thereby coupling the carrier to the drive gear.

Differential with disconnect

A system includes a support arm. The system includes an engine supported by the support arm. The system includes an armature supported by the support arm. The system includes a coupling device disposed around the armature and slidable between a first position in which the coupling device couples the engine to the armature, and a second position in which the coupling device is uncoupled from the engine.

Hybrid drive

A dual motor electric drive axle apparatus is disclosed that is enclosed within a single housing. First and second motors are disposed in the housing. First and second rotor shafts, and first and second chain drives including first and second driving sprockets are connected to the first rotor shaft. A first chain, and a first driven sprocket are connected to the first and second driving shafts by first and second chain respectively. First and second planetary gear sets having first and second input shafts are connected to the first and second driven sprockets. First and second output shafts are connected to first and second constant velocity joints that are located outside the housing. First and second axles are connected to the first and second constant velocity joints and are adapted to rotate first and second wheels respectively.

Electric drive axle with first stage chain drive

This disclosure describes powersplit hybrid transaxles for hybrid vehicles. An exemplary hybrid transaxle may include a dual sprocket assembly at least partially disposed between an engine and a first electric machine (e.g., a generator). A power transfer unit, such as a planetary gear set, may be nested within the dual sprocket assembly. Chains may operatively connect the power transfer unit to driven sprockets of a second electric machine (e.g., a traction motor) and a differential to provide torque to vehicle drive wheels. The proposed hybrid transaxles provide improved efficiency and compact packaging configurations.

Powersplit hybrid transaxles

A front wheel drive based four wheel drive powertrain includes range gearing, bevel gearing, final drive gearing, and a differential. The range gearing, final drive gearing, and differential are on the same axis. The bevel gearing, which transfers power to a rear drive unit, is upstream of the final drive gearing in the power flow. Consequently, no step-down ratio is required to provide a suitable driveshaft speed.

Ranged power take-off unit for transaxle

A vehicle includes an electric machine, an engine, and stator. The electric machine has a magnetic armature and an electromagnetic armature. The electromagnetic armature is secured to a wheel and has an electrical circuit that includes primary and secondary coils. The engine is configured to rotate the magnetic armature to induce current in the circuit via the primary coils. The stator has tertiary coils that are configured to transfer power to the electromagnetic armature via the secondary coils to drive the wheel.

Hybrid vehicle

A powertrain includes a first planetary gearset configured to establish a fixedly linear speed relationship among a first rotor, an engine crankshaft, and a second rotor. The powertrain further includes a gearing assembly configured to alternately selectively establish a plurality of proportional speed relationships between the second rotor and an output shaft. The gearing assembly further includes a second planetary gearset having a lockup clutch configured to selectively couple two rotatable elements of the second planetary gearset.

Lockup clutch for powersplit hybrid transmission

A transmission uses a chain and sprocket final drive that provides all final drive torque multiplication in addition to transferring power to the differential axis. The transmission includes a front support structure that provides for a small driving sprocket. The front support includes an insert made of hardened material that can serve as the inner bearing race for the driving sprocket. In some embodiments, four fluid passageways are provided to the torque converter. In some embodiments, the park gear may be integrated with the driven sprocket.

Transaxle having chain final drive

A hybrid transaxle permits location of a traction motor in a more favorable location, decreasing the risk of occupant injury in a vehicle collision. Axis transfer gearing moves the generator off the engine axis, which permits placing the traction motor further forward without interference with the generator. The gearing is confined to two gear planes, reducing the transaxle width.

Hybrid transaxle

A powertrain includes an engine and an electric machine. The powertrain further includes a planetary gearset including a a first rotatable element fixedly coupled to an engine crankshaft, a second rotatable element fixedly coupled to the electric machine, and a third rotatable element driveably connected to an intermediate shaft. The powertrain further includes a lockup clutch configured to selectively couple two of the first rotatable element, the second rotatable element, and the third rotatable element.

A variator and a powersplit hybrid are connected in series. The variator is preferably a Milner epicyclic variator which has a ratio range well suited to this application. The variator permits the powersplit to operate at an optimized speed ratio. The variator further permits improved energy capture during regenerative braking. In some embodiments, clutches alternately connect the variator in series with powersplit and bypass the variator.

Hybrid transmission with variator

A hybrid transaxle permits location of a traction motor in a more favorable location, decreasing the risk of occupant injury in a vehicle collision. Axis transfer gearing moves the generator off the engine axis. This permits placing the traction motor further forward without interference with the generator.

HyBrid transaxle

A transmission includes first, second, and third planetary gear sets (PGS). A first electric machine is fixedly coupled to a sun gear of the first PGS. A second electric machine is fixedly coupled to a carrier of the first PGS. A brake is selectively holding a ring gear of the first PGS against rotation. First and second clutches selectively couple the first and second electric machines, respectively, to a portion of the second and third PGS, respectively.

Multi-mode hybrid powertrain

A continuously variable transmission includes four shift elements to establish three forward driving ranges and one reverse driving range. Two of the forward driving ranges utilize recirculating power flow paths in which the power transmitted through the variator is much smaller than the power transmitted by the transmission. Both variator sheaves rotate about axes that are offset from the input axis such that neither sheave is partially submerged in transmission fluid.
