A method is provided to operate a computer to interoperate with a portable media player. The method includes processing signals provided from the portable media player to the computer that are indicative of whether an accessory has been connected to the portable media player, to determine whether the accessory has been connected to the portable media player. Based on a determination that the accessory has been connected to the portable media player, physiologic data of a user that was provided to the portable media player from a wireless physiologic data gathering device, is received from the portable media player, into the computer, via the accessory.

Devices and methods for storage power management that depend at least partly on the operational component requesting access to the storage. For example, an electronic device may include storage and data processing circuitry. The storage may be capable of being activated and deactivated. The data processing circuitry may be configured to include several operational components and to obtain data from the storage upon request by the operational components. Additionally, the data processing circuitry may manage when the storage is activated and deactivated. In particular, the data processing circuitry may manage when the storage is activated and deactivated according to a first storage power management scheme when a first of the operational components (e.g., an operating system component) requests the data and according to a second storage power management scheme when a second of the operational components (e.g., an application program component) requests the data.

The portable electronic device can pertain to a portable media player and thus also provide media playback.

There is provided a method for altering a sequence in which programs and content are loaded upon startup of an electronic device. A user may change the loading sequence by selecting a program or content before the loading sequence has finished. In addition, the altered loading sequence may be saved and utilized when the electronic device is powered on again. There is also provided a tangible, machine-readable medium for performing the described method. Finally, there is provided an electronic device having a memory device for storing a loading program that defines a loading sequence, a processor for loading programs and content based on the loading sequence, and a user interface for delivering user input to the loading program to alter the loading sequence.

User influenced loading sequence of startup applications

Techniques for converting file-systems used for organizing and storing data on computer readable mediums are disclosed. A first file-system is converted to a second file-system while file(s) stored on the computer readable medium remain(s) virtually undisturbed in the same location. A FAT file-system (e.g., FAT32) is converted to an HFS file-system (e.g., HFS Plus) by generating HFS data structures (Catalog, Allocation File and Extents) for file(s) already stored in the HFS file-system. The number and location of the file(s) can be determined primarily based on the FAT file-system's data structures (FAT and Directory). The conversion process can be stopped before the FAT file-system indicators (partition map and boot sector) are overwritten. After the HFS data structured have been generated and successfully verified for the file(s) already stored on the computer readable medium, the HFS file-system can effectively replace the FAT file-system by modifying the partition map and writing a volume header that may overwrite that boot sector. Similarly, A HFS file-system can be converted to a FAT. In general, any file-system used to organize and store files can be converted based on the location of the files(s) which is typically readily obtainable from the original file-system.
