A dross extraction system for a printer is disclosed, which includes an ejector defining an inner cavity associated therewith, the inner cavity retaining a liquid printing material. The dross extraction system also includes a first inlet coupled to the inner cavity of the ejector, a probe external to the ejector, which is selectably positionable to contact the liquid printing material to attract dross thereto, thereby extracting dross from the liquid printing material when the probe is withdrawn from the liquid printing material. A method of extracting dross from a metal jetting printer is also disclosed, which includes pausing an operation of the metal jetting printer, advancing a probe into a melt pool within a nozzle pump reservoir in the metal jetting printer, extracting dross from the metal printing material and onto the probe, retracting the probe from the nozzle pump reservoir, and resuming the operation of the metal jetting printer.

An apparatus is disclosed that automatically generates a set of recommended printer settingsfor a print jobsubmitted to a printer. The apparatus comprises at least one processor which executes computer program code from at least one memory, wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are configured, with the at least one processor, to cause the apparatus at least to: receive a submitted print job for a printer, the submitted print job including content to be printed by the printer and a set of user input printer settings for the printer; analyze the content to be printed by the printer; designate a classification for the submitted print job based on said analysis; obtain historical data from a knowledge database, the historical data being related to prior print jobs run on the printer and indicating printer settings used when running the prior print jobs on the printer; and output a set of recommended printer settings based at least in part on one or more of the received print job, the designated classification and the obtained historical data.

System and method for optimizing a printer setup

A method is disclosed. For example, the method executed by a processor of a multi-function device (MFD) includes tracking a machine state of the MFD, predicting a potential defect based on a determination that the machine state is associated with a defect class of a plurality of different defect classes, determining a maintenance routine associated with the defect class, and executing the maintenance routine to prevent the potential defect.

Examples of the preferred embodiments use an ink quantity metric (e.g., lightness L*, darkness, image density, line width) of printed content to determine thickness of fountain solution applied by a fountain solution applicator on an imaging member surface and/or determine image forming device real-time image forming modifications for subsequent printings. For example, in real-time during the printing of a print job, a sensor (e.g., spectrometer) may measure the ink quantity metric of the current printing on print substrate. Based on this measurement of printed content output from the image forming device, the image forming device may adjust image forming (e.g., fountain solution deposition flow rate) to reach or maintain a preferred fountain solution thickness on the imaging member surface for subsequent (e.g., next) printings of the print job.

Method for monitoring a fountain solution layer in an image forming device

According to aspects of the embodiments, there is provided a method of measuring the amount of fountain solution using a hot wire anemometer. Fountain solution thickness is measured using the flow rate of vaporized fountain solution and comparing to baseline air only flow rate. The vaporized measurement is correlated with the baseline utilizing specific heat, density and enthalpy values and keeping velocity of fluid constant. Changes in the measurement will then be related to the specific heat, density and enthalpy. Density can be back calculated to yield volume and knowing the area of the image being printed give a real time thickness value.

A system for cleaning and treating a printhead includes (a) a movable carriage having affixed to a base of the movable carriage a cleaning blade and an absorptive pad, (b) a low vapor pressure organic solvent, the low vapor pressure organic solvent is deliverable to the absorptive pad via a pump, the low vapor pressure organic solvent has a vapor pressure lower than water and (c) a carriage moving mechanism that moves the carriage so that the cleaning blade and the absorptive pad pass over the printhead.

A method for measuring a blur of a print job and adjusting printer parameters in response to the blur is disclosed. For example, the method may be performed by a multi-function device (MFD) and includes printing an image on a print media, scanning the image, calculating a blur count for each location of the image in a cross-process direction, determining that the blur count for at least one location of the image is above a blur threshold, and adjusting at least one print parameter for a subsequently printed image on the MFD.

A system dynamically balances a rotating body. The system includes a support that holds the body as it rotates. At least one sensor generates signals indicative of a balance of the body as it rotates and a controller identifies a position on the body where material can be placed to balance the body. The controller operates at least one actuator to move a plurality of ejectors opposite the identified position where the controller operates at least one ejector in the plurality of ejectors to eject material onto the identified position. The system can operate iteratively until the body is balanced within a predetermined range.

A decurler method and apparatus that compensates for ink contamination buildup on an indent roll of a decurler in aqueous ink jet products that can lead to paper wrinkle. A gap between the centers of the indent roll and a soft roll is increased to prevent sheet wrinkle by employing an algorithm that determines when the rolls are in contact and are first matching speed with each other and then treats this position as a home position.

Method and apparatus for mitigating sheet wrinkle resulting from decurler contamination

What is disclosed is an apparatus and method for inhibiting the formation of sediment in an ink sub-tank of a MICR inkjet printer. In one embodiment, the present apparatus comprises an ink sub-tank containing MICR ink substantially comprising a ferrofluid of particles, and an electromagnet. When the MICR inkjet printer is turned OFF, the electromagnet is lowered into a chamber inside the ink sub-tank and an electric current is applied to activate the electromagnet. Activation of the electromagnet causes the particles of the ferrofluid to be attracted to the electromagnet's magnetic field such that the particles are lifted off a bottom of the sub-tank to inhibit sediment formation thereon. The electromagnet is de-activated when the MICR inkjet printer is turned OFF. A sensor is employed to activate the electromagnet when sediment in the ink sub-tank has reached a pre-determined level.
