This disclosure features use of a paper or polymer film that includes a slip agent that can transfer to its surfaces. Once the paper or film is pressed against a glass sheet, this will leave a thin surface roughness of slip agent that can prevent or reduce glass surface scratches from other surfaces or particles during shipping or finishing (e.g., cutting to size, conveyance of glass), thereby improving the yield of glass shipments between glass forming plants and customers. The thin discontinuous layer of slip agent remaining on the glass surface can be washed off easily in subsequent washing processes. The paper or film can have the slip agent imbibed within the paper or coated on it as a surface member.

An edge finishing apparatus includes a surface, a fluid delivery device configured to deliver at least one magnetorheological polishing fluid (MPF) ribbon to the at least one well, at least one magnet placed adjacent to the surface to selectively apply a magnetic field in a vicinity of the surface, and at least one holder placed in opposing relation to the surface, the at least one holder being configured to support at least one article such that an edge of the at least one article can be selectively immersed in the MPF ribbon delivered to the at least one well.

Edge finishing apparatus

A method and apparatus for forming vents () in glass sheets (). The method includes repetitively performing the steps of: (I) bringing a score head () and a platen () into contact with, respectively, the front () and rear () major surfaces of the glass sheet (), (II) moving the score head () across the front major surface () along a predetermined path to form a vent (), and (III) withdrawing the score head () and the platen () from the front () and rear () major surfaces, wherein: (i) the thickness (&#x3b4;) of the glass sheet is less than or equal to 500 microns, and (ii) for each repetition of steps (I) through (III), the platen () is cleaned after step (III) and before step (I) to remove glass chips which if left on the platen () could cause the score head () to penetrate through the thickness &#x3b4;.

Methods and apparatus for scoring thin glass

Methods of finishing an edge of a glass sheet comprise the step of machining the edge of the glass sheet into a predetermined cross-sectional profile along a plane taken transverse to the edge of the glass sheet with an initial average edge strength ES. The methods also include the step of finishing the edge with at least one finishing member, such as an endless belt, without substantially changing a shape of the predetermined cross-sectional profile. In one example, a wet slurry including an abrasive can be applied to at least one of a finishing member and the edge of the glass sheet. After finishing the edge, example finished average edge strengths EScan be at least about 250 MPa. In addition or alternatively, in another example, the ratio ES/EScan be within a range of from about 1.6 to about 5.6.

A method of preparing an edge-strengthened article comprises polishing of an edge of an article having a first edge strength using magnetorheological finishing, wherein after the polishing the article has a second edge strength and the second edge strength is greater than the first edge strength.

A glass sheet guidance system includes a guidance member () having a small contact area with the glass sheet () and being taut to provide guidance to the glass sheet. In order to provide consistent guidance, even in environments where there is a large change in temperature, the guidance member is held taut by a tension member (). The guidance member is supported by holders () so that, while remaining taut, the guidance member can be moved in three dimensions so as to accommodate glass sheets having different widths (), heights (), and thicknesses (). Also, there is provided a method of guiding glass sheets with the guidance system.

Cathode ray tube neck glass

These color television (CTV) panel tint glasses involve using base CTV panel glass compositions with enhanced levels of Ni and Co colorants. The approach uses non-lead CTV panel glass compositions with high levels of Ni and Co oxide as colorant glasses for tinting clear CTV non-lead panel glass. Nickel oxide was varied from 2 to 18%, while cobalt oxide was varied from 0.2 to 2%. A preferred range of compositions with cobalt oxide levels below 1% and nickel oxide levels below 10% was found to be very acceptable for CTV panel colorants.
