A switch includes a reserved pool of buffers in a shared memory. The reserved pool of buffers is reserved for exclusive use by an egress port. The switch includes pool select logic which selects a free buffer from the reserved pool for storing data received from an ingress port to be forwarded to the egress port. The shared memory also includes a shared pool of buffers. The shared pool of buffers is shared by a plurality of egress ports. The pool select logic selects a free buffer in the shared pool upon detecting no free buffer in the reserved pool. The shared memory may also include a multicast pool of buffers. The multicast pool of buffers is shared by a plurality of egress ports. The pool select logic selects a free buffer in the multicast pool upon detecting an IP Multicast data packet received from an ingress port.

Management of congestion level, in a computer-related context, is disclosed. Also disclosed is a system generating a plurality of computer network-related tables during system operation. A number of the tables are each separately indexed by a different index. The system includes at least one tangible computer-readable medium adapted to store, at each indexed location, a swap count providing an indication of the congestion level of the indexed location. The system also includes insert logic stored as instructions on the at least one medium for execution. When executed, the insert logic is operable to: i) insert, when a predetermined condition has been satisfied, a new entry by overwriting the current entry stored in the indexed location having the lowest swap count; and ii) update the swap counts in each of the indexed locations in a manner that maintains the total swap count at least substantially constant over time.

Congestion management in a network

A data regeneration device regenerates a digital signal in a low-speed pass-through mode of operation, performs an upstream link equalization procedure on an upstream data link in an equalization mode of operation, performs a downstream link equalization procedure on a downstream data link in the equalization mode of operation, and regenerates the digital signal in a high-speed pass-through mode of operation. The data regeneration device transitions seamlessly from the low-speed pass-through mode of operation to the equalization mode of operation in compliance with a communication protocol. Moreover, the data regeneration device synchronizes completion of the upstream link equalization procedure with completion of the downstream link equalization procedure so that the data regeneration device transitions seamlessly from the equalization mode of operation to the high-speed pass-through mode of operation in compliance with the communication protocol.

A space switch includes a buffer having a plurality of serial inputs, a plurality of de-serializers, each coupled to a respective input, a plurality n of buffers and a media access controller having inputs coupled to the plurality of de-serializers, data outputs coupled to the buffers, and two control outputs coupled to respective buffers for buffering input data at a clock rate one-nth that of the input data and a switch fabric connected to the buffers for matching buffer data throughput with switch data throughput. Preferably the buffer is a bifurcate buffer. This space switch described ensures matching of buffer and switch fabric throughput.

The arbiter can be generalized to an n-furcated switch having n-furcated ports where n is an integer greater than or equal to two.

Bifurcate arbiter

A packet switch includes a pipeline scheduler for scheduling packets according to a credit-based flow control protocol. A credit update pipeline stage initializes available credits for egress ports of the packet switch. A request pipeline stage generates packet requests for packets based on the available credits. A grant pipeline stage selects packets based on the ports requests and the available credits, and generates port grants for the selected packets. Additionally, the credit update stage updates the available credits based on the port grants. The packet switch routes the selected packets from ingress ports of the packet switch to the egress ports based on the port grants. In some embodiments, ingress ports generate enqueue requests based on the packets, an enqueue pipeline stage generates enqueue states based on the enqueue requests, and the request pipeline stage selects packets for routing based on the enqueue states and the available credits.

A packet switch includes ingress ports, each of which contains a random access memory having a storage capacity for storing data. An ingress controller of the packet switch allocates the storage capacity of each random access memory among transaction types of packets by allocating credits to each of the transactions types for the random access memory. Each ingress port accepts packets based on the transaction types of the packets and the credits of the random access memory in the ingress port. Moreover, the ingress port stores accepted packets in the random access memory of the ingress port. In further embodiments, the ingress controller dynamically reallocates the credits of the random access memory in the ingress port during operation of the packet switch.
