A method of authentication of a verifying device by a confirming device includes the confirming device receiving and storing a shared secret derived from at least a password of a user and sending a challenge. The method further includes the confirming device receiving a response to the challenge using the shared secret; determining if the response to the challenge is correct and if the response to the challenge is correct, authenticating the verifying device.

Authentication of a peer in a peer-to-peer network

A system includes long-term storage (e.g., flash memory) for storing sensitive data and critical components of a consumer electronic (CE) device such as an operating system (OS) kernel, private cryptographic key values, security applications, and firmware configurations, for example. Security hardware/software designates and restricts access to secured portions of long-term storage that contain the critical components. Requests for access to these secured portions are addressed by the security hardware/software, which authenticates a cryptographic authorization code received with the request. Read-write access to the secured portions is allowed for download and installation of, for example, a software or firmware upgrade if the cryptographic authorization code is authenticated.

Using hardware to secure areas of long term storage in CE devices

A method for securely connecting a software defined radio (SDR) to a server through a network is presented. A request to download a radio configuration (R-CFG) file is sent from the SDR device to the server. A determination is made that the R-CFG file is configured to control a plurality of radio frequency parameters for the SDR device solely within levels permitted by a regulatory agency. The R-CFG is then downloaded to the SDR device.

A digital cable network architecture and services method includes a cable medium and a plurality of hosts that include a receiver. A policy file store contains policy files having at least one of a service provider section, a consumer section, and a manufacturer section that can be updated by at least one of the service provider, a consumer and a receiver manufacturer, respectively. A service provider that is associated with the policy file store provides digital cable services over the cable medium to the hosts and downloads monitor applications and policy files to the hosts over the cable medium. The MAs use the service provider section, the consumer section, and/or the manufacturer section of the policy file to alter resource contention, alter service provisioning at levels below a channel level, and/or alter fraudulent receiver identification calculations.

Flexible digital cable network architecture

The Routing Information Protocol [RIP] is extended to include a network-wide unique interface identifier [UID] that allows the zeroconfiguration multiple router [R, R] network to detect subnet conflicts. Detected conflicts are automatically repaired by the respective routers assigning and advertising new subnet mappings. The extended, Zeroconfiguration Routing Information Protocol [ZRIP] employs a NORMAL/CHANGE status flag associated with each routing table entry to resolve ambiguity between normal routing advertisements and conflict notifications. Address re-mapping and name-to-address resolution is provided to support both network address translation [NAT] and virtualized address paradigms.

An entertainment device is provided for adaptively tuning to a content signal. The entertainment device includes a receiver responsive to content signals provided to the entertainment device. A selected channel of the receiver provides an output signal to an output terminal of the automobile entertainment device. A data processor is operably linked to the receiver for receiving a signal index of the content signal. The data processor is responsive to a predetermined signal index for actuating the receiver to select the specific channel corresponding to the predetermined signal index. A memory stores the predetermined signal index in accordance with an operator preference. Thus, the predetermined signal index enables the entertainment device to adaptively adjust to an operator's preferred content.

Entertainment device having a content library and adaptive content selection

A method is provided for transcoding between video signals in two standards, DV and MPEG-2, each standard including discrete cosine transform (DCT) compressed signals. The each of the signals have macroblocks containing a plurality of DCT blocks. The DCT blocks are quantized according to respective quantization methods defined by the standards. The coefficients in each block are zigzag scanned, run-length coded and variable-length coded. The process variable-length decodes the coefficients and translates the quantized coefficients in the DV standard into quantized coefficients in the MPEG standard without fully dequantizing at least some of the DV coefficients and without performing an inverse DCT operation on any of the DCT coefficients. DV blocks that are encoded in a 248 format are translated into an 88 format before they are converted to MPEG-2 blocks. A method for transcoding from MPEG-2 to DV is also described. The MPEG-2 signals are intra-frame encoded, have a 4:2:2 chrominance format and an 88 frame-encoded block format. According to this method, converted 88 DV blocks that represent significant intra-field motion are converted from the 88 format to a 248 format. The method also controls which overflow coefficients in the DV signal are transcoded into corresponding coefficients in the MPEG-2 signal to control the data rate of the MPEG-2 signal.

System and associated method for transcoding discrete cosine transform coded signals

A global positioning system (GPS) is provided for displaying static cartographical data in accordance with a GPS signal and integrating dynamically updated data during display. The GPS system includes a receiver responsive to the global positioning signal. The receiver has a first communication module responsive to a signal of a content provider. The signal of the content provider defines dynamic content. The receiver has a data processor for integrating the dynamic content with the static cartographical data. A display device of the GPS system displays the integrated cartographical data and dynamic content. In this way, the dynamic content is provided to the global positioning system to alert an operator of traffic patterns and hospitality venues in relation to displayed static cartographical data.

System and associated method of integrating subscriber based traffic navigation and hospitality data with a global positioning system

A distributed file system using autonomous disks is disclosed. The file system includes autonomous data disks that store the application data of the distributed file system. Legacy attribute disks store the file system's meta-data and directory structure. The directory structure is stored on the legacy attribute disks using the native file system. One of the clients of the file systems is utilized as a configuration manager to control access to the system. The distributed file system employs agents to support real-time applications and concurrent read/write to files.

Method of integrating subscriber based traffic navigation and hospitality data with a global positioning system

A portable computer is configured to receive programming that is automatically updated by a subscription service. The portable computer includes a facility to connect to one or more subscription services on or through a host computer. The portable computer identifies itself to the subscription service and automatically receives updates for any services registered to it. A log file records information and stimuli received by the portable computer. The subscription service uses the log file to update subscriptions. One embodiment of the portable computer is configured to fit within a shell representing a character or object associated with a subscription. The portable computer may include one or more interface ports allowing the portable computer receive stimulus from sensors in the shell and or to activate transducers in the shell. In one embodiment of the invention, the portable computer is coupled to a cellular telephone.

Portable electronic subscription device and service

A vehicle data archive system is provided. An instrumentation interface receives at least one sensory data signal of the vehicle. A memory stores the at least one sensory data signal. A first transponder responds to a periodic provider signal of a trusted third party (TTP)/service provider for creating a corresponding shared encryption key, which is used to generate a digital signature from the stored data, the signature may be stored with the data or returned to the TTP/service provider. The signature is used to authenticate the data stored in the archive system. The encryption value used to generate the signature may be stored locally in the data archive or obtained from the TTP/service provider. The data in the data archive may also be stored without encryption. The system also allows an authorized user to delete a portion of the stored encrypted sensory data.

An entertainment device is provided. The entertainment device includes a main processing station which provides an output signal. The main processing station includes a control interface. A front panel is removably connected to the control interface. The front panel includes a memory for storing multimedia content. The front panel provides control parameters to the main processing station. The content of the memory is provided to the main audio processing station for output. In addition, the front panel processes and presents the stored multimedia content as a portable device. Both control parameters and multimedia (e.g. audio or video) information may be exchanged between the front panel and the main processing station. The front panel also includes a telecommunications device and an alarm transponder.

Removable front panel for an entertainment device

A system (300) for combining a panning camera (308) with one or more displays (304), such as head-mounted displays, is provided. A panoramic view from an electronic panning camera may be provided to an electronic panning control circuit (510). The electronic panning control circuit may be responsive to a view selector (306), such as a head-tracker located on a user's HMD. The electronic panning circuit selects the desired portion of the panoramic view to send to the user's display. A stereoscopic, view providing for a depth-of-field effect simulating actual vision, stereo view is achieved by locating a first electronic panning camera (502) in an optically horizontally offset relation with a second electronic panning camera (504). An image splitter (510), such as a half silvered mirror, sends the same, slightly horizontally offset, to both cameras. Individually pannable views may be delivered to users via a communications network (312). One or more electronic panning cameras may output stereoscopic views to a communications network using high bandwidth lines (because the electronic panning cameras typically output a signal having a bandwidth equivalent to several video signals). The panoramic views may be received by local central offices (806) which include electronic panning circuits responsive to users' HMDs. The desired portions of the stereoscopic view may be extracted and sent to the user via conventional video bandwidth lines (because the selected views are typically equivalent to one or two video signals).

Head mounted displays linked to networked electronic panning cameras

A camera arrangement (100) comprises first and second sets of one or more cameras (102, 104, 202, 204, 204') and a half-silvered mirror (130). The one or more cameras of the first set look through the half-silvered mirror--i.e., receive light that passes through the half-silvered mirror. The one or more cameras of the second set look off the half-silvered mirror (130)--i.e., receive light reflected off the half-silvered mirror. The cameras of the first and second sets are positioned so that individual fields of view (103, 105, 203, 205, 205') of the cameras of the first and second sets alternate to form a wide angle aggregate field of view (110, 210). The field of view of each individual camera merges contiguously along a boundary with the field of view of a camera from the other set. This permits cameras which form adjacent sections of the wide angle field of view to be located at physically separate locations in space yet have individual fields of view which appear to originate at the same physical location in space. An additional mirror (160, 160') may be associated with each camera of the second set to provide a second reflection of the light received by the cameras of the second set to avoid image reversal. There are no mirror edges within the aggregate wide angle field of view. Thus, there are no artifacts in the high resolution image produced by the camera arrangement at the boundaries of the sub-images produced by the individual cameras.
