An online system receives a content item from a user and provides the content item for display to the user's connections. The online system receives interactions performed by the user's connections with the content item. From the content item and the interactions, the online system extracts features to be input into a model. The model is trained to determine whether the content item should be classified as a life event and in which category. Based on output from the model, the online system classifies the content item as a life event in a particular category and provides an option to the user to upgrade the content item into a life event item of the particular category. Upon receiving the user's agreement to upgrade, the online system generates a life event item specific to the particular category and provides the life event item for display to the user's connections.

An online system receives a request from a posting user to post content describing a type of life event about the posting user to a user profile page of the posting user as well as a privacy setting for the content. The online system accesses a set of animations, in which each animation is associated with a type of life event and selects an animation that is associated with the type of life event about the posting user. Upon receiving a request from a viewing user to view the user profile page, the online system determines whether to include the selected animation in the user profile page based on the privacy setting and information describing a connection between the users. Based on the determination, the online system generates a user interface including at least the user profile page and sends the user interface for display to the viewing user.

An online system maintains a plurality of content items for presentation to users in one or more feeds of content items, the users including a plurality of content creators providing content items for presentation. The online system identifies a first set of content items provided by a content creator. The online system identifies a viewing set of users who viewed one or more content items in the first set of content items. The online system identifies a second set of content items provided by other content creators and viewed by the viewing set of users. The online system ranks the second set of content items and generates a feed of content items for the content creator including the ranked content items. The online system provides the generated feed for presentation.
