A branded fleet server system includes a pre-assembled third-party computer system integrated into a chassis of the branded fleet server system. The pre-assembled third-party computer system is configured to execute proprietary software that is only licensed for use on branded hardware. A virtualization offloading component is included in the server chassis of the branded fleet server along with the pre-assembled third-party computer system. The virtualization offloading component acts as a bridge between the pre-assembled third-party computer system and a virtualized computing service. As such, the virtualization offloading component manages communications, security, metadata, etc. to allow the pre-assembled computer system to function as one of a fleet of virtualization hosts of the virtualized computing service.

A baseboard management controller (BMC) included in the server chassis couples with the pre-assembled computer system via one or more cables coupled to ports of the pre-assembled computer system. The BMC enables remote control of the pre-assembled computer system, such as remote power on and power off. An electro-mechanical device, such as a solenoid, presses a power button of the pre-assembled computer system based on control signals from the BMC to change a power state of the pre-assembled computer system.

The pre-assembled third-party computer system is configured to execute proprietary software that is only licensed for use on branded hardware. A baseboard management controller (BMC) included in the server chassis couples with the pre-assembled computer system via one or more cables coupled to ports of the pre-assembled computer system. The BMC enables remote control of the pre-assembled computer system, such as remote power on and power off. Also the BMC may enable automatic and remote software and/or firmware updates to be performed at the pre-assembled computer system.

Integration and remote control of a pre-assembled computer system into a server for a virtualization service

A diagnostic testing utility is used to perform single link diagnostics tests including an electrical loopback test, an optical loopback test, a link traffic test, and a link distance measurement test. To perform the diagnostic tests, two ports at each end of a link are identified and then statically configured by a user. The ports will be configured as D_Ports and as such will be isolated from the fabric with no data traffic flowing through them. The ports will then be used to send test frames to perform the diagnostic tests.

A blade includes both a motherboard and daughter card to allow the combined functionality to be incorporated into a single blade for size reduction. Standoffs couple the daughter card to the motherboard. Cantilever portions of the motherboard and daughter card exist between the standoffs and terminals of the motherboard and daughter card. The cantilever portions bend to accommodate any misalignment between the terminals of the motherboard and the daughter card and mating connectors of a bulkhead or printed circuit board backplane.

Pluggable transceiver modules with additional functions and circuitry contained within the module. In a first embodiment, additional circuitry is added to determine bit error rates at the point of the module itself. This allows a much better diagnostic evaluation of location of problem. In an alternate embodiment, various logic is placed in the module. In a first alternate embodiment encryption/decryption units are placed in the converter module so that encryption and decryption operations on the serial bitstream do not need to be performed in a switch. Existing switches can be used but the interconnecting links can still be encrypted. A second alternate embodiment includes compression/decompression units placed in the module to allow effective higher throughput on the selected links.

An electronic device includes a bulkhead assembly. The bulkhead assembly includes a bulkhead and one or more cable cassettes coupled to the bulkhead. The cable cassettes include floating connectors. The cable cassettes are modular assemblies that contain all the wiring and connectors. As the connectors float in the cable cassettes, the cable cassettes are blind mated to the bulkhead as standalone units.

Cable backplane assembly and method

A blade for a chassis-based system includes a printed circuit board (PCB) mounted at a tilt angle within the blade. The tilt angle provides space above or below the PCB at the front end of the blade, such that media interface modules can be flexibly positioned within the blade. A tilt angle that positions the PCB higher near the front end of the blade may enable media interface modules mounted in a belly-to-belly configuration on the PCB to be fitted within the front end of the blade. A tilt angle that positions the PCB lower near the front end of the blade may enable media interface modules mounted on the upper surface of the PCB to be fitted within the first end of the blade. The tilt angle also positions a backplane connector mounted on the PCB to properly engage a backplane when the blade is inserted into a slot.

An electronic device includes a blade having a faceplate and a handle out locked position ejector. The handle out locked position ejector is configured to secure the blade to a chassis. The handle out locked position ejector includes two ejectors and a handle binding the two ejectors together. The handle out locked position ejector extends perpendicularly from the faceplate when the blade is secured to the chassis thus locating the handle out of the way of ports of the blade.
