A method for encapsulating a monitoring device for a pneumatic tire, wherein the monitoring device includes a threaded rod and a pressure sensor, includes the steps of positioning the monitoring device in an encapsulation chamber of an encapsulation device with a portion of the threaded rod extending from the encapsulation chamber; engaging the threaded rod against the encapsulation device to suspend the electronic monitoring device within the encapsulation chamber; and filling the encapsulation chamber with encapsulation material to encapsulate the monitoring device to form an encapsulated monitoring device. The encapsulated monitoring device may be mounted to a pneumatic tire with an attachment patch.

Method and device to encapsulate tire tag

An air spring has a pair of end members which are sealingly connected to ends of a flexible sleeve and form an internal fluid chamber. A rigid annular member is located within the fluid chamber and is spaced from one of the end members and clamps the sleeve against a rigid member located outside of the sleeve and fluid chamber. A vibration isolator, such as an annular elastomeric member, is located between the rigid outer member and the adjacent end member to support the sleeve and reduce its tension in order to isolate sleeve vibration from the end member.

A device for encapsulating a monitoring device for a pneumatic tire with an encapsulation material includes an encapsulation body having an encapsulation chamber. The monitoring device has at least a pressure sensor and an antenna. A damming element is carried by the encapsulation body in an adjustable manner such that the damming element prevents the pressure sensor from being clogged with the encapsulating material when the monitoring device is encapsulated.

An air spring has a pair of axially spaced end members and an intervening elastomeric flexible sleeve extending therebetween which forms a fluid pressure chamber. A plurality of axially spaced ribs and intervening grooves are formed on an inner surface of a ring which align with corresponding ribs and grooves formed on an axial sealing surface of one of the end members to form a fluid tight seal with the elastomeric sleeve clamped therebetween. An annular radially extending projection is formed on each of the ring and end member which cooperatively mate with each other to provide a mechanical interlock therebetween which is free of intervening elastomeric material, to securely retain the ring in position with respect to the end member sealing surface.

A device for encapsulating a monitoring device for a pneumatic tire with an encapsulation material includes an encapsulation body having an encapsulation chamber. The monitoring device has at least a pressure sensor and an antenna. A damming element is carried by the encapsulation body in an adjustable manner such that the damming element contacts the pressure sensor of the monitoring device when the monitoring device is disposed within the encapsulation chamber. The damming element prevents the pressure sensor from being clogged with the encapsulating material when the monitoring device is encapsulated. The antenna of the monitoring device is held in a channel formed in the body when the monitoring device is disposed within the encapsulation chamber. The connection between the antenna and the body holds the monitoring device in a floating disposition in the encapsulation chamber. The damming element is in the form of a tube that also helps carry the monitoring device in the floating disposition. A breathing tube abuts the pressure sensor and extends through at least a portion of the damming element to further prevent the encapsulation material from clogging the pressure sensor. A top plate of the body extends over the encapsulation chamber to form a lip that serves to indicate when the encapsulation chamber has been filled with the encapsulation material.

A vibration damping device for mounting between two spaced portions of a vehicle for absorbing road forces exerted on the vehicle. An inner metal cylindrical housing forms an internal piston chamber and is connected at one end to one portion of the vehicle, with the outer end of the rod of a piston which is slidably mounted within the piston chamber, being connected to the other portion of the vehicle. An outer housing surrounds a portion of the inner housing and forms a fluid transfer duct between fluid chambers formed on opposite sides of the piston within the piston chamber. A plurality of spaced metal electrode bands are mounted on an inner surface of the outer housing and are electrically isolated therefrom and communicate with the fluid transfer duct for applying voltages across the duct to affect the viscosity of an electrorheological (ER) fluid flowing therethrough to increase the damping force of the device. Certain of the electrode bands may be formed with a plurality of circumferentially spaced, longitudinally extending splines and intervening grooves, which grooves align with splines and grooves formed in a dielectric insulating sleeve mounted adjacent the fluid transfer duct.

A vibration damping device for mounting between two spaced portions of a vehicle. An inner metal cylindrical housing forms an internal piston chamber and is connected at one end to the vehicle, with a piston which is slidably mounted within the piston chamber, being connected to another portion of the vehicle. An outer housing surrounds a portion of the inner housing and forms a fluid duct or flow channel between fluid chambers formed on opposite sides of the piston. An electrode is mounted in the fluid duct for applying a voltage across the duct to affect the viscosity of an electrorheological (ER) fluid flowing therethrough to increase the damping force of the device. The electrode includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced splines and intervening grooves extending longitudinally along the fluid duct. The bottom portions of the grooves have a decreased electric field applied thereto than do the splines, providing bleed grooves or leak paths for the ER fluid to decrease the shear-rate of the fluid. The inner housing has elongated projections which extend into the grooves of the electrode to provide a more uniform electric field along the fluid duct to control the amount of leakage through the bleed grooves. A secondary electrode ground may be formed in the grooves to control the electric field in the bleed grooves.

A vibration damping device includes axially spaced first and second end members adapted to be mounted on spaced apart structures. An intermediate member is mounted within an open end of the second end member. A center member consisting of a rigid tube having a hollow bore and a lower piston is connected to the first end member and extends through the interior of the intermediate member. The tube forms an annular orifice which extends about a rigid electrode rod which extends through the rigid tube and which is also connected to the first end member and piston but electrically isolated therefrom. A pair of elastomeric sleeves extend between the intermediate member and first end member and between the intermediate member and the piston to form a pair of fluid chambers communicating with the orifice and adapted to contain an electrorheological fluid. Each of the sleeves has a rolling lobe with circular centers and different radii of curvature. However, the circular centers of the rolling lobes lie on a common imaginary axially extending cylinder whereby the effective areas of the fluid chambers remain substantially equal as the device moves between jounce and rebound positions to reduce the spring rate effect on the damper. Even though the rolling lobes have the same circular centers the radii of the lobe forming walls are different which enables nesting of the piston within the intermediate member to reduce the axial height of the device without affecting its stroke length.

A vibration damping device is comprised of first and second axially spaced end housings adapted to be mounted on spaced apart structures, and has a tapered intermediate member mounted on the second housing converging toward an open end of the first housing. A piston is mounted on an end of a rod which is connected to the first housing and extends through a bore formed in the intermediate member and forms a restricted flow orifice extending between the spaced apart housings. A pair of elastomeric sleeves extend between the intermediate portion and the piston and the first housing to form a pair of fluid chambers connected by the orifice. An elongated electrode preferably contacts an electrorheological fluid flowing between the chambers through the orifice. The tapered intermediate member is nestable within the interior of the first housing when the device is in a jounce condition and the tapered piston is nestable within the interior of the intermediate member when the device is in a rebound condition to provide a compact damping device without sacrificing stroke length, and which enables the length of the electrode to be independent of the stroke length.

Vibration damping device

A suspension system for a vehicle having a shock absorber strut with a reciprocal piston rod located within a cylinder, and attachments for securing the piston rod and cylinder to spaced parts of the vehicle. An air spring includes a rigid annular canister mounted on the piston rod by a resilient rotatable mount. The canister forms a fluid pressure chamber in conjunction with a flexible diaphragm, one end of which is sealingly connected to the cylinder by an annular rigid sleeve which forms an air spring piston. The flexible diaphragm has inner and outer radially spaced portions connected by a rolling portion. A rigid member resembling a cutaway can is mounted on the rigid canister portion of the air spring and extends about a predetermined portion of the outer portion of the flexible diaphragm and restrains outward expansion of said portion. Restriction of the outward expansion of only a portion of the flexible diaphragm exerts a lateral force on the strut to counteract the unbalanced lateral forces acting thereon due to the offcenter mounting of the strut with respect to the point of contact of the vehicle wheel with the pavement. The suspension system furthermore provides dual path isolation for separating the canister from the vehicle by a primary elastomeric isolator ring and from the strut by secondary elastomeric bushings mounted on the strut, which bushings also provide an upper air seal for the fluid pressure chamber.

An air spring formed by an axially spaced end member and a piston member with an intervening elastomeric flexible sleeve therebetween which forms a fluid pressure chamber. An annular clamp ring having a recess on the inner diameter thereof coacts with a corresponding annular projection on the outer diameter of the rigid piston member to positionally locate the ring on the piston member. A pair of clamping surfaces are located on opposite sides of the projection and are separated therefrom by expansion grooves. The projection and clamping surfaces form a series of pinch areas with the intervening sleeve, which sealingly clamp the sleeve therebetween. The expansion grooves receive portions of the sleeve and change the direction of reinforcing cords within the sleeve. Another radially extending groove traps a partially compressed end of the sleeve therein and provides an additional material expansion area. The clamp ring seats upon a shoulder of the piston member to reduce movement of the ring during operation of the air spring. The positioning of the ring proximate to the edge of the piston member provides a substantially continuous surface on which the sleeve rolls during operation of the air spring to reduce wear on the sleeve.

An ultrasonic air spring system adapted to be mounted on a vehicle for absorbing road shocks exerted on the vehicle and for maintaining the vehicle body level with respect to the axles. An air spring includes an end plate and a piston sealingly connected to the open ends of the flexible elastomeric sleeve to form a pressurized fluid chamber therebetween. A transducer is mounted on the end plate within the fluid chamber and transmits ultrasonic signals through the fluid chamber toward the piston and picks up reflected signals therefrom. A signal is generated by the transducer in response to the reflected signals and fed to a microprocessor based control module. The control module determines whether the air requires fluid feed or exhaustion and will then implement control of inlet or exhaust valves to achieve a desired axial separation between the end plate and piston.

Ultrasonic air spring system

An air spring for motor vehicles including first and second end members, at least one of which is a piston, with an intervening flexible sleeve forming a fluid pressure chamber therebetween sealingly connected to the end members. A continuous annular sealing band clamps at least one end of the flexible sleeve within an annular recess formed on the inside surface of an annular wall portion of one of the end members within an open end of the end member by compressing the sleeve material between the band and wall, and without deforming the band or wall of the end member beyond their elastic limits. In one embodiment, the annular wall of the end member is formed of plastic and is deformed outwardly but maintained within its elastic limits upon insertion of the band within the open end. The end of the sleeve is rolled over the sealing band and then the sleeve end and band are inserted by a press plate into the open end of the end member with the band compressing and sealing the flexible material of the sleeve into the annular recess. The compressed flexible material expands to seal the sleeve against the end member. In another embodiment, the press plate expands the plastic material of the end member outwardly upon inserting the band and a rolled end of the flexible sleeve into the annular recess of the annular wall portion whereupon the wall attempting to return to its unstressed state seals the flexible sleeve between the sidewall and band.
