Both the read and write heads are trimmed to approximately 100 nm wide, indicated by Wr and Ww, respectively. The etch depth for the MR element, MR Trenches, is 200 nm and the etch depth for the write head, Write Trenches, is 1 &mgr;m. In order to confirm that inactive regions are actually those selected for irradiation, during trimming the center of the trimmed MR element has been offset by approximately 300 nm from the center of the original MR element. This offset is observed in the final result.

Track width control of readback elements with ions implantation in a bounding region of tip portion to selectively deactivate magnetic sensitivity thereof

Non-magnetic transition metal spacer layers 2.5 to 50 Angstroms thick with compositions of Os, Ru and Re are used in laminated magnetic structures. The ultra-thin non-magnetic transition metal spacer layers are useful to fabricate micron and sub-micron laminated magnetic devices. The laminated magnetic structures using ultra-thin non-magnetic transition metal spacer layers of Os, Ru and Re have anti-ferromagnetic coupling between the magnetic layers. The anti-ferromagnetic coupling provides a mechanism for reduced edge curling and efficient directional magnetization. Alloying the non-magnetic transition metal layer provides a method for engineering coupling strengths, coercivities and remanences in magnetic structures useful for high frequency applications. These laminated magnetic structure have applications in magnetic read head, magnetic write head, magnetic memory, and miniature transformer devices.

A disk drive power manager that compares energy usage with a predetermined profile to select one of several reduced-power operating modes. An energy usage register is updated at regular intervals according to the energy used during each time interval. An attenuated average energy usage value is obtained by attenuating the energy usage measures over time and integrating the results. The average energy level is compared with several predetermined energy threshold profiles to select a full- or reduced-power operating mode. Operating mode selection automatically adapts to the usage pattern to optimally balance power consumption with operational accessibility.

A system is disclosed for canceling cross-talk in a data read signal from an optical data storage medium. The system includes three AD converters for receiving read signals from three read sensors, and the read signals respectively represent data from a center data track and its two adjacent side data tracks on an optical data storage disk. The digitized signals are sent to a skew compensator to remove time skew between the signals. Then, the amplitudes represented by the side track signals are adjusted, and the adjusted side track signals are subtracted from the center track signal to cancel cross-talk in the center track signal which is attributable to data contained in the side data tracks. The center track signal is then equalized to account for the frequency response of the center track read sensor.

Integrated transducer-suspension assembly for vertical recording

A method and means is described for writing data on a recording medium, such as a disk or tape, containing servo samples in such manner that the number of servo samples is increased with a minimal increase in overhead (non-data) regions. The tracks on the medium are divided into a plurality of maxi sections, each of which contains all fields with servo and associated overhead information and also a data field. At least one micro servo section containing only a portion of said information is located within each data field. As each micro servo section passes by an associated recording head, writing and reading of data is temporarily interrupted, but resumed when the micro servo section moves beyond the head, in such manner as to require minimal resynchronization of said data during reading. Using a phase continuous clock, data is written in both portions of a data field to either side of each micro servo section in one pass of the disk or tape relative to the head. The micro servo sections contain no timing reference address mark and require no data encoder/decoder flush or synchronization byte to resume reading in the portion of the data field following each micro servo section.

A single track read/write head design is disclosed in which a pair of solid state magnetically permeable sensors such as coupled film magneto resistive sensors are joined together with a central flux conducting probe in the general form of a T or Y connection with the probe extending downward toward a magnetic record medium to conduct flux to or from the medium for writing or reading therefrom. Alternatively, a single coupled film magneto resistive sensor may be bifurcated at its central area at the intersection with the flux coupling probe. The resultant flux coupled from the magnetic medium is divided between the two sensors, or two halves of a sensor, where it alters the magneto resistive or other magnetic property of the sensor in a differential sense, i.e., the left half or left sensor will experience an increase or decrease in resistance while the right half or right sensor experiences an opposite decrease or increase in resistivity, respectively. The design permits the magnetically permeable sensors to be located at a remote elevation or distance from the record medium to reduce wear and critical lapping problems in manufacture. Allowing the sensors to lie in a generally horizontal plane relative to the magnetic record medium permits magnetic biasing of the magneto resistive sensors in a flux path which does not enter the medium itself and thus avoids unwanted flux coupling sensor and/or bias flux to the medium which interferes with reading and writing of the data record. The differential nature of the flux energization path of the two sensors or sensor halves results in common mode noise rejection from flying height variations between the coupling probe and the medium and of other electrical disturbances common to the circuits of the sensors.

A thin film metallic position-indicating track is applied to the upper surface of the dielectric layer. The dielectric material is coated with a magnetic recording medium. A linear disk actuator is disclosed incorporating a magnetic circuit for reducing stray magnetic fields in the region of the disks and recording heads of a magnetic recording disk system. The moving part of the actuator is provided with a plurality of coils mounted thereon, at least two of which are energized simultaneously and in magnetically opposing relationship to reduce the amplitude of the stray magnetic fields. Movement of the actuator is achieved by both energized coils interacting with a set of alternating poles positioned on the stationary part of the actuator.
