There is disclosed a laser driver or transmitter in which a drive current is generated by monitoring the temperature of an integrated circuit that generates drive current for the laser. The temperature sensed at the integrated circuit is transformed to a corresponding temperature at the laser. A drive current is generated for the laser that is dependent on the corresponding temperature at the laser.

A line-based 911 system and method that completes an emergency call from a telephone to a PSAP comprising a multiplicity of operator stations connected by individual lines to a telephone switching system. An emergency call is routed to the termination ports of the switching system associated with a PSAP. Each of the termination ports is connected to one of the multiplicity of operator stations via its associated line, thereby establishing a path from the telephone to the operator station, the CPN of the calling telephone is delivered to the selected operator station and the operator station obtains location information of the telephone in accordance with the CPN, which is then displayed.

A data link is disclosed which utilizes differential communication between pairs of transmitting and receiving devices. In particular, one device of each pair is reserved for communicating a logic'O' and the other is reserved for communicating a logic '1'. The pairs are grouped to form an array which is capable of providing simultaneous parallel communication, at relatively low bit rates, between two equipment components. The communication may be either unidirectional or bidirectional between the components. The ability to integrate the arrays of transmitting and/or receiving electronics and optics allows for improved reliability of the inventive system over a single fiber, high data rate, alternative.

Disclosed is a connector which permits optical connections between a circuit pack and backplane. The optical components are mounted on a major surface of a circuit pack near the edge. Optical fibers are mounted within a housing which is secured to the backplane. The use of springs within the housing gives sufficient tolerances so that the fibers are aligned with the components when the circuit pack is inserted within a shelf.

A transceiver is adapted for communication with another transceiver over a common channel by a technique that allows both transceivers to be identical in manufacture and use. The technique avoids designating one transceiver the 'master' and the other the 'slave', by relying on random time differences between transmissions during a start-up period that initially establishes communications. The transmissions are typically in multi-bit packets. An example using an optical transceiver having a light emitting diode used for both optical transmission and optical detection is given, wherein the channel is an optical fiber.
