A vehicle identification system for use in a refueling station for identifying vehicle requirements, in which a control unit is located in a fuel dispenser for controlling functions of the dispenser such as fuel selection and activation of the dispenser's vapor recovery systems, and a driver circuit is located on the nozzle spout. The control unit communicates with the driver circuit through an intrinsically safe connection in a fuel hose and is programmed to periodically transmit a low power pulse signal to the driver circuit through this connection. The driver circuit includes a power generating means and an antenna for generating an RF interrogation signal in response to each pulse. The RF interrogation signal is detected by a transponder disposed on a vehicle adjacent the vehicle's fill pipe, when the nozzle is positioned adjacent to or in the fill pipe for refueling. The RF interrogation signal energizes the transponder to transmit a return signal containing vehicle identification codes accessed from a memory storage means in the transponder. These identification codes identify vehicle requirements, such as for example, fuel type. The driver circuit further includes a filter for detecting the identification signal from the transponder, and transmitting the signal to the control unit. The control unit interprets the vehicle identification codes and generates signals to control the dispenser in accordance with the vehicle requirements.

A fuel dispensing nozzle is provided with a view glass/fuel flow indicator that are disposed between the main fuel valve and a downstream check valve. The view glass/flow indicator means comprise a pair of horizontally aligned view glasses. A plurality of embodiments illustrate the use of different sub-assemblies in providing the view glass/flow indicator functions, as well as different provisions for obtaining a seal that prevents leakage of fuel at the view glass units.

A dry disconnect coupling comprises an adapter connected to a liquid conduit and a coupler connected to another liquid conduit. The adapter and coupler each have poppets which seal passageway outlets thereof when they are disconnected. When connected, means are provided for simultaneously opening the poppets by displacing them with their end faces in contiguous relation. An O-ring, mounted in a groove in the end face of the coupler poppet sealingly engages the end face of the adapter poppet to prevent wetting of the end face surfaces of the poppets and thereby minimize liquid which could be a source of liquid when the coupler is disconnected from the adapter. Six alternate sealing rings, for providing an end face seal, are described.

Dry disconnect couplings

A rack, which cooperates with a trigger of a manually operated handle of an automatic shut-off nozzle, is removably mounted on the nozzle guard so that the nozzle can be utilized in a mechanical hold open mode or a manually controlled mode when the rack is mounted on the guard and cannot be utilized in the mechanical hold open mode when the rack is removed but only in the manually controlled mode.

A linkage assembly for linearly moving a valve of a coupler between its open and closed positions has a yoke pivotally connected to a first link which is fixed to a rotary shaft so that the yoke rotates about the axis of the rotary shaft during a predetermined angular rotation of the rotary shaft. The yoke and a second link, which is pivotally connected to the valve, are in bearing engagement during the predetermined angular rotation. During a portion of the predetermined angular rotation, the center of the bearing surface of the second link is maintained in alignment with the axis of rotation of the shaft by a pin on the second link riding in an arcuate channel fixed to the shaft for rotation therewith.

Linkage assembly for a coupler

A swivel connector between a hose reel and a source of product has a first body secured to the source of product and a second body secured to the hose reel. The first body has a plurality of stepped bores cooperating with various outer surfaces of the second body. A pair of non-metallic, non-corrosive bearings is disposed between two different stepped bores and two different outer surfaces with a seal ring disposed therebetween. A plastic thrust ring is disposed between a shoulder of the first body and a first surface of a thrust flange of the second body to absorb the thrust due to relative movement of the second body into the first body. The thrust flange has a second surface, which is parallel to the first surface, against which a first wear ring bears. The first wear ring has a plurality of balls bearing thereagainst on its side remote from the thrust flange. A retainer is supported on the first body and has a flange providing a surface against which a second wear ring abuts. The second wear ring also bears against the balls, which absorb the thrust due to relative movement of the second body out of the first body. The two non-metallic, non-corrosive bearings absorb the bending loads.
