A network for multi-bit word parallel communication between optoelectronic chips on a two dimensional array of optical input and output channels carried on a single dimension of optical fibers. Each bit of a word is carried on a different wavelength and the multiple wavelengths carrying a word are wavelength multiplexed onto a single optical fiber. Multiple fibers can be joined into a one dimensional array of fibers. A transceiver for transmitting and receiving along the optical data channels comprises an array of modulators powered by individual wavelength light beams, either from individual monochromatic light sources and a light beam from a single broadband light source made to pass through a diffraction grating. The modulators are positioned so that each modulator reflects a different wavelength light beam, thereby providing multiple optical channels. Alternatively, multiple wavelengths are generated from CMOS integrated light sources. These multiple optical channels are then collimated and guided into one single mode fiber or multiple multimode fibers at its transmitting end. At the receiving end a diffraction grating is used to separate the distinct data channels by their individual wavelengths. The multiple wavelengths are then caused to fall on an array of optical detectors spaced according to the individual wavelengths to be detected. By constructing a one dimensional array of these fibers, a two dimensional array of optical data channels is realized. The size of the array is determined by the number of fibers and the number of distinct wavelengths combined in each fiber.

A method for designing an integrated circuit having optical inputs and outputs includes the step of selecting an integrated circuit design which includes at least one circuit cell design for processing electric signals. The circuit cell design has a predetermined number of electric inputs and electric outputs. The integrated circuit design also includes a plurality of layers of metalization for providing electric coupling. After the electronic integrated circuit design is selected, a predetermined number of optical input devices are located on the circuit cell design in a first prearranged orientation. The predetermined number of optical input devices is no greater than the predetermined number of electric inputs to the circuit cell. Also after the electronic circuit design is selected, a predetermined number of optical output devices are located on the circuit cell design in a second prearranged orientation. The predetermined number of optical output devices is no greater than the predetermined number of electric outputs to the circuit cell. At least a topmost layer of metalization is selected for electrically coupling each optical input device to a distinct one of the electric inputs of the circuit cell and for electrically coupling each optical output device to a distinct one of the electric outputs of the circuit cell. Finally, the completed design for the integrated circuit with optical inputs and outputs is recorded in a memory such as an electronic storage medium.

A smart pixel array is disclosed wherein a single optical beam can be used to transmit information to and from each subarea or cell of the pixel array. An optical P-I-N diode with an intrinsic MQW region is present in each subarea, and the optical beam is oriented to impinge on the diode. A first transmission gate couples information to be transmitted to the diode during a transmit interval, and information received by the diode is coupled through a second transmission gate to a receiver circuit during a receive interval. A third transmission gate couples a reset potential to the diode during spacing intervals between the transmit and receive intervals.

An optical signal attenuation device and associated method for selectively attenuating the signal strengths of different wavelength signals contained within a multiplexed optical transmission. The attenuation device includes a diffracting element that diffracts the multiplexed optical system and directs the different wavelength signals onto separate optical paths. A modulator array is provided that contains a plurality of optical modulators spaced at a pitch so that each modulator receives one of the different wavelength signals. Each optical modulator causes a signal to be produced that correspond to the signal it receives, except that the signal strength of the emitted signal is altered to fall within a desired range. Each signal emitted by the optical modulators is again directed toward a diffraction element. The diffraction element combines the separate wavelength signals, thereby producing a multiplexed signal where each wavelength has a signal strength that falls within a common range.

For use in a soliton optical pulse transmission system, an apparatus for, and method of, increasing a signal-to-noise ratio of the system. The apparatus includes: (1) a component for receiving a soliton and an accompanying background noise from the system and increasing a power density of the soliton and the accompanying background noise and (2) a saturable absorber, having a predetermined recombination rate, for receiving and absorbing a portion of the soliton and the accompanying background noise, the predetermined recombination rate causing the saturable absorber to absorb a lesser portion of the soliton than of the accompanying background noise, the component having increased the power density of the soliton and the accompanying background noise to increase a sensitivity of the saturable absorber, the apparatus thereby increasing the signal-to-noise ratio of the system.

Apparatus and method for improving signal-to-noise ratio in wavelength

Optical analog information processing capability is achieved by providing a SEED device configured to operate in a differential mode. This 'differential SEED' utilizes pairs of input signal beams to represent bipolar analog data and to process those data in a linear fashion. The difference in the optical powers of the input signal beams is used to modulate the absorption of power supply beams in quantum well diodes, such that the difference in the absorbed powers in the quantum well diodes is proportional to the difference in the powers of the input signal beams. The differential SEED can be configured to perform various image processing operations on bipolar analog data, including, for example, image addition and subtraction, optical multiplication, and evaluating spatial derivatives.

An optical subsystem arrangement enables the electrical conductive or non-conductive bonding of an optical device to ferrules containing an optical fiber or to the optical fiber itself. In one embodiment, one or more contacts deposited on an end-face of the ferrule is bonded to one or more contacts on the optical component. The present invention provides an apparatus and method for high-density optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) using a single optical source. An optical wavelength division multiplexer in accordance with the present invention includes an optical source providing an optical pulse signal. A wavelength splitter separates the optical pulse signal spectrum into a plurality of channel signals at different wavelengths such that each channel signal may be separately modulated or otherwise processed. A wavelength combiner then recombines the separately modulated channel signals to provide a high-density WDM optical signal particularly well-suited for use in optical circuit interconnection and optical communication network applications. The high-density single-source multiplexer of the present invention may also be conveniently adjusted to align channel signal wavelengths or to compensate for optical fiber dispersion.

An apparatus for converting a bipolar optical signal to a unipolar optical signal includes first and second photodetectors electrically coupled in series for receiving the bipolar optical signal. An electro-absorption modulator such as a self-linearized modulator, for example, is electrically coupled to the photodetectors. The modulator serves to transmit therethrough a portion of the power of an optical beam in an amount proportional to the power of the bipolar optical signal to form a transmitted beam. A constant current source is provided for supplying a current that shifts the power of the optical beam transmitted through the modulator by a predetermined amount, thus forming the desired unipolar optical signal.

An apparatus for amplifying the optical power ratio includes first and second input electro-absorption modulators coupled together in series that each receive an optical input beam. First and second output electro-absorption modulators are coupled together in series and each generate an optical output beam. A voltage amplifier electrically couples a first node located between the first and second input modulators to a second node located between the first and second output modulators. In operation, the power ratio of the output beams is a function of the power ratio of the input beams.
