An implantable miniaturized pressure sensor integrates a capacitor and an inductor in one small chip, forming a resonant LC circuit having a Q value of 10 or greater. The capacitor has an upper capacitor plate and a lower capacitor plate disposed proximate thereof. The upper and lower capacitor plates are connected to one or more spiral inductor coils. The sensor is micromachined from silicon to form a thin and robust membrane disposed on top of the upper capacitor plate. The sensor is hermetically sealed and the membrane is deflected relative to the upper capacitor plate by an external fluid, gas, or mechanical pressure. The resonant frequency of the sensor can be remotely monitored and continuously measured with an external detector pick up coil disposed proximate the sensor. The sensor can be smaller than 2&#xd7;2&#xd7;0.5 mm and is particularly useful for intraocular applications.

This invention relates to the design and application of a goniectomy instrument for the purpose of diagnostically and therapeutically removing tissue from the anterior chamber angle of the eye and for retrieving this tissue for further examination. The surgical instrument of this invention comprises in combination: a hollow, tapered shaft having a cutting edge at one end as an integral part thereof; a retractable stylet contained within the hollow interior of the tapered shaft; and an irrigation port running along the outside of the tapered shaft. This instrument is useful for excising tissue to relieve an obstruction blocking the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye as well as for providing specimens of the excised tissue for histopathological examination.

Surgical instrument

This invention relates to a medical device and a method of using the device to deliver a continuous controlled supply of a medication to a specific internal site. Specifically, the invention comprises an inert, biodegradable implant impregnated with one or more therapeutic agents designed to provide a controlled, localized and sustained release of the therapeutic agents. In a preferred embodiment, the device comprises an ocular implant which bioerodes within the eye environment thereby gradually releasing the therapeutic agents at the site to be treated until the entire implant eventually erodes without the need for further surgery. The invention is especially suitable for treating post-operative glaucoma patients.

Drug delivery device

A non-invasive, continuous applanation tonometer for measuring intraocular pressure is disclosed. The instrument comprises a flexible contact lens which includes an inflatable applanating chamber; a reservoir of a substantially noncompressible fluid connected to the applanating chamber by a thin, flexible tube; a pump for moving the substantially noncompressible fluid between the reservoir and the applanating chamber; and a pressure transducer to measure the fluid pressure.
