An imaging system is provided with an ultrasound catheter and a controller coupled to the ultrasound catheter. The catheter includes a localizer sensor configured to generate positional information for the ultrasound catheter, and an imaging ultrasound sensor having a restricted field of view. The controller co-registers images from the imaging ultrasound sensor with positional information from the localizer sensor.

Method and apparatus for localizing an ultrasound catheter

A system and method for limiting a temperature induced in a body by an ultrasound imaging catheter are provided. The method includes receiving, at an isolation box, an imaging signal from an imaging catheter, receiving, at an isolation box, a signal indicative of a temperature of tissue adjacent to the imaging catheter, removing power to the imaging catheter at the isolation box if the signal indicates the temperature of tissue adjacent to the imaging catheter exceeds a known value, and sending the imaging signal from the catheter to a processor if the signal indicates the temperature of tissue adjacent to the imaging catheter is less than the limit.

Safety systems and methods for ensuring safe use of intra-cardiac ultrasound catheters

A method and system for estimating the volume of blood ejected from the left ventricle of the heart to a succeeding chamber/conduit, or vice-versa, while imaging the intersection of such structures is described. The process utilizes either the M-mode to estimate volume differences in a view of the ventricle over time or Doppler processing techniques to obtain flow profiles across intersections (e.g., valves), or blood vessels, which are then utilized to calculate output. This process can be combined with ECG guidance/triggering to measure/track changes in output from beat to beat, or during the course of an evaluation or therapeutic procedure. This process can be specifically used for the placement of permanent pacemaker electrodes.

Method and system for using ultrasound in cardiac diagnosis and therapy

Method for screening patients to predict which patients at risk of a medical disorder, such as morbid obesity, gastrointestinal problems, or gastroesophageal problems, will be responders, and conversely, which patients will not, to achieve a favorable outcome from therapy for that disorder. This method supports an intervention strategy for patients having weight or gastrointestinal problems that will cut health costs. It enables patients and care-givers alike to more efficiently use their time, efforts and resources by enabling an early selection of an appropriate treatment modality for a given patient. Its application also extends to other implantable medical devices and therapies using them.

Method for screening and treating patients at risk of medical disorders

An improved medical implant device is provided which has a plurality of micro-electrodes. The use of a plurality of micro-electrodes allows a clinically effective electrical stimulation pathway to be selected once the implant is positioned within or adjacent to the tissue to be treated even if the implant is not optimally placed or located. Thus, in cases where the implant is not optimally placed, it is not necessary to remove the implant and then reposition it within or adjacent to the tissue to be treated, thereby reducing stress to the patient caused by additional surgery. Moreover, using the micro-electrodes of this invention, directional electrostimulation can be provided to the tissue to be treated. Implant devices with a plurality of micro-electrodes are provided which are especially adapted for use in reducing the frequency and/or severity of neurological tremors. Other implant devices having micro-electrodes are provided which are especially adapted for electrostimulation and/or electrical monitoring of endo-abdominal tissue or viscera.

Medical implant device for electrostimulation using discrete micro-electrodes

An ultrasonic imaging catheter is disclosed that includes a thermistor mounted on the catheter in the vicinity of the ultrasound transducer for monitoring the temperature in the vicinity thereof. The electrical signal from the thermistor can be used to control the output of the ultrasound transducer to thereby control the temperature of the same. In a further aspect of the invention, an isolation box is provided that is external to the ultrasound machine itself and is connected to the same by a cable. Ideally, the isolation box which houses a sufficient number of isolation transformers, is small, so it can be placed easily on or near the patient's bed.

Apparatus for stimulating neuromuscular tissue of the gastrointestinal tract and methods for installing the apparatus to the neuromuscular tissue. The pulse generator is provided with a switching matrix, and may stimulate the tissue in a time-varying manner by selecting pairs of electrodes and altering the polarities thereof while stimulating the tissue. In addition, a real-time clock allowing a trigger for on and off modes, the time clock could also allow for a trigger to change parameters. Such parameters that could be changed are pulse width, amplitude, duty cycle (amount of time of pulse and time between pulses, or series of pulses), frequency, polarity, choice of unipolar versus bi-polar, and electrode on-off. The electrical stimulation utilizes a plurality of electrodes connected to at least one organ in the gastrointestinal tract of a patient along a peristaltic flow path with each of the electrodes being connected at a different location along the peristaltic flow path. Electrical pulses are provided to the organ from a first set of the plurality of electrodes and second electrical pulses are provided to the organ from a second set of electrodes. The electrical pulses provided are in an independent non-phased relationship for maintaining therapeutic regulation of peristaltic flow through the at least one organ in the gastrointestinal tract while defeating the body's natural tendency for adaption.

Gastric stimulator apparatus and method for installing

Apparatus for stimulating neuromuscular tissue of the gastrointestinal tract and methods for installing the apparatus to the surface of the neuromuscular tissue. A pair of electrodes are supported by an electrode attachment member having a distal surface configured for attachment to the surface of the neuromuscular tissue. The electrodes are supported adjacent the distal surface to provide an interface between the electrodes and the surface of the neuromuscular tissue. The electrode attachment member may be flexible to pass through a laparoscopic surgical access opening in a compacted form and then returned to an uncompacted form for attachment to the surface of the neuromuscular tissue by the use of staples or sutures.

Apparatus for stimulating neuromuscular tissue of the gastrointestinal tract and methods for installing the apparatus to the neuromuscular tissue. Four electrodes are supported by an electrode assembly for attachment to the neuromuscular tissue. The electrodes are oriented substantially equidistantly with respect to the tissue and provide an electrical interface with the neuromuscular tissue. The pulse generator is provided with a switching matrix, and may stimulate the tissue in a time-varying manner by selecting pairs of electrodes and altering the polarities thereof while stimulating the tissue.

An improved medical implant device is provided which is designed and adapted for use in laparoscopic surgery. This medical implant device is especially adapted for precise and proper placement of the electrodes relative to the tissue to be treated. Additionally, the medical implant device, once properly placed, can be secured so as to substantially reduce the risk of displacement of the device, and especially the electrodes, during normal movement of the tissue. This medical implant device is especially adapted for electrostimulation and/or electrical monitoring of endo-abdominal tissue or viscera. Generally, the implant devices of this invention have an elongated body equipped with immobilizing mechanisms or devices to secure it to the tissue or viscera to be treated and two or more electric poles that are electrically connected to an electric connection terminal for connection to a power source, a mechanism for penetration of the tissue or viscera to be treated, and a quick-release connecting device to separate the penetration device from the elongated body. The improved medical implant device of this invention is obtained by precisely controlling the relative positioning of the electrodes and the immobilizing mechanisms along the elongated body. This implant device can be easily inserted and properly placed or anchored in the viscera to be stimulated. This improved implant device includes electric poles and immobilizing components properly disposed with respect to each other to ensure effective electrostimulation and/or electrical monitoring of the tissue or viscera of the mammalian body (especially the human body), especially tissue and internal organs the endo-abdominal cavity.

Medical device for use in laparoscopic surgery

An improved medical implant device for laparoscopic surgery is especially adapted for precise and proper placement of electrode leads relative to tissue to be treated. Once properly placed, the device and the electrode leads can be secured to substantially reduce the risk of displacement during normal movement of tissue. The implant device is adapted for electrostimulation and/or electrical monitoring of endo-abdominal tissue or viscera. The device comprises: 1) an elongated body with immobilizing mechanisms or devices to secure it to the tissue or viscera to be treated, 2) two or more electric poles that are electrically connected to an electric connection terminal for connection to a power source, 3) a mechanism for penetration of the tissue or viscera to be treated, and 4) a quick-release connecting device to separate the penetration device from the elongated body. A unique arrangement of immobilizing mechanisms and poles along the lead body permits easy insertion and placement of the device, and ensures effective electrostimulation and/or electrical monitoring of tissue, viscera, and internal organs of a person (or other mammal's) endo-abdominal cavity.

A defibrillation electrophysiology catheter for stimulating the heart and sensing the resulting activity of the heart for determining a patient's potential to have an arrhythmia occur under uncontrolled circumstances and for defibrillating the heart if fibrillation occurs accidentally during the testing is disclosed. The catheter is provided with electrodes formed on the distal surface of the catheter which is placed near the patient's heart. The electrodes may be placed on the catheter in a variety of configurations. An external electrode in the form of a patch or pad is placed on the patient's back. Energy is applied to the system in order to shock the heart and defibrillate the same. The procedure is less invasive than the procedures requiring the electrodes to be implanted at or near the patient's heart and chest wall and requires less energy and time than the procedures requiring the use of two external paddles.

Electrophysiology catheter

An improved handle for a medical device used in laparoscopic surgery is provided. This handle is especially adapted for use with an implant device specifically for electrostimulation and/or electrical monitoring of endo-abdominal tissue or viscera is provided. The implant device has an elongated body equipped with devices to secure it to the tissue to be treated and two or more electric poles that are electrically connected to an electric connection terminal for connection to a power source, means to penetrate the tissue to be treated, and quick-release connecting devices to separate the penetration device from the elongated body. The handle, which is an elongated body, is attached to the proximal end of the implant device or other medical device and has a grasping means at its opposite end for manipulation with laparoscopic forceps.
