A prepreg which is capable of being cured-in-place into a solid surface by irradiation, heating or a combination of the two is prepared. The cured-in-place solid surfaces can be used as veneer cladding for rigid substrates such as floor and wall tiles, kitchen and bath counter tops, sinks, cabinet door veneers, bath surrounds, architectural surfaces such as columns and roofs and the like.

This invention relates to a device that provides controlled release of a fragrant or deodorizing substance: the fragrant or deodorizing substance being solubilized with an appropriate carrier solvent within a polymeric matrix. The layers function as protective barriers, semi-permeable membranes, fragrance reservoirs, and adhesives. The device is capable of delivering a fragrance at a controlled rate for a prolonged period of time through the gradual diffusion and release of fragrant material carried by a solvent from a reservoir system to the semi-permeable UV curable, oligomer composition acting a fragrance release regulator. Additionally, the UV curable, oligomeric composition that forms the reservoir and regulating layer can be engineered to be adhesive through cure inhibition. The method of cure inhibition can also be utilized to create internal areas of high and low cross link density to further control the release rate of a fragrance.

UV curable, liquid, oligomeric compositions are prepared from the reaction product of a Michael addition oligomer and an isocyanate capped polybutadiene. The UV curable, liquid, oligomeric compositions can be cured in the presence of fragrances to form articles that are characterized by a controlled release of the fragrance over time.

Phenolic resin polyols are disclosed. The polyols, which contain aliphatic or mixed phenolic and aliphatic hydroxyl groups, are the reaction products of aralkylated phenols or phenol aralkylation polymers with an oxyalkylating agent selected from alkylene oxides and alkylene carbonates. The phenolic resin polyols are versatile intermediates for many polymer systems, including urethanes, epoxies, alkyds, acrylates, and polyesters.

This invention relates to an organic foundry binder containing an alkyl resorcinol, or preferably a readily available mixture of alkyl resorcinols, and derivatives thereof. Preferably, the organic foundry binder is a furan binder. Foundry mixes are prepared by mixing the binder with a foundry aggregate. Foundry shapes (molds and cores) are prepared by shaping the mix and allowing it to cure to form a workable foundry shape. The invention also relates to the preparation of metal castings using the foundry shapes and the metal castings prepared with the foundry shapes.

Phenol aralkyistion polymers can be prepared by reaction among a phenolic monomer, at least one styrenic monomer and an aryl diolefin. A phenolic monomer can be initially aralkylated in the presence of an acid catalyst with a first portion of at least one styrenic monomer to obtain an aralkylated phenol. The aralkylated phenol thereafter can be reacted with an aryl diolefin to obtain a phenol aralkylation polymer. Optionally, (though preferably) the phenol aralkylation polymer is further aralkylated with a second portion of at least one styrenic monomer. By employing specific catalyst concentrations, reactant concentrations, reaction temperatures, and reaction times, the formation of mono-functional and non-functional by-products is substantially reduced.

This invention relates to furan no-bake foundry binders comprising (a) a reactive furan resin, (b) furfuryl alcohol, and (c) a catalyst component comprising a catalytically effective amount of a Lewis acid furan catalyst. The invention also relates to foundry mixes prepared with the binder, foundry shapes prepared with the foundry mix, and metal castings prepared with the foundry shapes.

Furan no-bake foundry binders and their use

A lactone chain-extended polyester polyol of the present invention comprises the reaction product of a lactone and a previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound may comprise the reaction product of (i) a lactone or an alkoxylating agent selected from the group consisting of alkylene oxides and alkylene carbonates, and (ii) a phenolic aralkylation polymer comprising the reaction product of a phenolic monomer having at least two free reactive positions; a styrene derivative; and a coupling agent. The previously chain-extended phenolic-based hydroxyl compound also may be chain-extended by reacting with a lactam to produce a lactam chain-extended polyester polyamide. The polyols and polyamides of the present invention provide unique combinations of hard and soft functionalities, which translates into materials exhibiting a unique combination of toughness and hardness. These materials are especially suitable for use in high solids coatings and in the development of resins which can be readily processed into thermoset resins. The materials also may function as compatibilizers for thermoplastics.
