The invention provides targeting radioactive immunoreagents comprising a metal radionuclide ion, a complexing agent having structure A-I, as defined in the specification, and an immunoreactive group covalently bonded to the complexing agent. The present invention also provides novel complexing agents having the structure A-I, as defined in the specification. The targeting radioactive immunoreagents are particularly useful in therapeutic and diagnostic imaging compositions and methods.

1,5-Bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-cyanoformazans substituted in at least one of the 3-, 4- and 5-positions of either phenyl moiety are useful for the determination of magnesium ions. The cyanoformazan substituents are chosen such that their cumulative Hammett-sigma value is greater than about 0.23. Disclosed herein is an assay useful for the quantitative determination of hemoglobin in whole blood. This assay utilizes a multizone element comprising a registration zone comprising particulate barium sulfate distributed in a 'blush' polymer, and a spreading zone having a void volume and an average pore size (e.g. greater than 5 microns) effective to accommodate whole blood. The element also contains an interactive composition capable of converting substantially all forms of hemoglobin into a detectable end product. One particularly useful interactive composition comprises a hemoglobin oxidizing agent (e.g. ferricyanide) and thiocyanate. Another useful interactive composition comprises an ionic surfactant, e.g. sodium octyl sulfate or sodium dodecyl sulfate.
