A method for rerouting IP (Internet Protocol) telephony call information includes, during an active IP telephony call made by a first IP telephony phone for originating IP telephony calls over an IP network, with a boundary element, actively detecting a network failure condition in the IP network which indicates a switchover to a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) network and generating a failure notification; and with a server for receiving the failure notification, generating a dynamic switchover instruction generated that is sent to the first IP telephony phone, the dynamic switchover instruction initiating automatic switchover of the active IP telephony call to a PSTN network. A method for rerouting IP (Internet Protocol) telephony call information includes, with a server, monitoring an IP network for route failures; and with the server, generating a switchover instruction when an active IP telephony call is interrupted by a route failure. The switchover instruction initiates automatic switchover of the active IP telephony call to a fallback call routed through a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The switchover instruction includes information which identifies the fallback call as a replacement for the active IP telephony call.

Method and apparatus for PSTN-based IP active call recovery and re-routing

A system and method for network based policy enforcement of intelligent-client features is provided. An operator of an IP telephony and/or IP multimedia network may enforce authorization or privileges of intelligent end-user clients to utilize or invoke services in the network. A network policy enforcement point is maintained in the network by elements that are under control of the network operator. The network policy enforcement point controls access to, and invocation of, features and services that may otherwise be delivered to subscribers without the knowledge or authorization of the network. The network policy enforcement point receives messages, associates the message with a known service, makes a determination as to whether a beneficiary of the service is authorized to invoke the service, and then filters the messages based on the determination.

A method and system for network based call-pickup is provided. In one embodiment a first user agent communicates in a communication session with a second user agent in a network telephony system. The second user agent may request that a third user agent replace the second user agent in the communication. The third user agent may be a park server, and when it replaces the second user agent, the communication session may thereby be parked at the park server. A fourth user agent may then request that the third user agent (e.g., park server) initiate a communication session between the first user agent and the fourth user agent. The third user agent may then instruct the first user agent to communicate with the fourth user agent. The parked communication session may thereby be picked up by the fourth user agent.

Method and system for network based call-pickup

A system and methods are shown for providing presence state services in an Internet Protocol network. One exemplary system includes a central presence element configured to track and provide user presence state information, and a local presence element in communication with the central presence element and further in communication with a signaling entity. According to one embodiment, the local presence element is configured to create and manage local presence state authorization data generated based on user presence state information being received from the central presence element. Further, the local presence element is configured to authorize a user service request using the local presence authorization data before providing access to a service requested by the user in the user service request.

A Media Gateway proxy receives a message and parses the message. The message contains an attribute, sub-command, and a destination address. The proxy stores the message and the attributes. Each of the attributes corresponds to a selected one of a plurality of Media Gateways. Each of the gateways has an address. The proxy finds in the memory the address of the selected Media Gateway using the destination address and the attribute. The proxy then forms a message using said sub-command, said address, and said attribute and transmits the message to the destination Media Gateway.

A system and method for maximizing the use of bandwidth optimization techniques in a voice-over-packet telephony system. In exemplary embodiments, the VOP system includes a plurality of telephones connected to a VOP telephony system. Upon receiving request to initiate a VOP connection, the end office switch connects to an originating softswitch for signaling functions and to an originating media gateway for transporting the media associated with the VOP connection. A connection information system accessible to the softswitch maintains connection information relating to media sessions between the originating media gateway and a plurality of candidate terminating media gateways. The connection information system may be accessed during connection initiation and advantageously used to determine whether there are nearly-simultaneously occurring and distinct media sessions having common endpoints such that bandwidth optimization techniques may be implemented.

System and method for maximizing the use of bandwidth optimization techniques in voice-over-packet connections

A method and system for providing directory based services is provided. The directory service may process an ambiguous destination identifier from a call-session request to multiple database entries in a directory server, and return an appropriately constructed response that can be interpreted by a user as a prompt for additional input to refine the destination identifier. The possible matches could be sent as a list of possible choices. The user can then select the desired match from the list and send a follow-on request including the selection to the directory server. Based on the selection, the directory server will then either send additional possible matches to the user or obtain a contact address corresponding to the selection. After resolving the ambiguous match to a unique destination identifier, a call can then be established.

Gateway routers for real-time networks have the ability to collect delay, loss, and jitter statistics on a per-connection basis. It is possible to use this information not only to monitor the quality of individual voice calls and other real-time connections, but also to evaluate the overall performance of the underlying network. This paper describes a method for monitoring and managing the performance of a real-time data network that supports voice, video and other real-time services. In the described embodiments, the RTCP mechanisms of RTP for sender and receiver reporting be used to relay performance information to one or more network monitoring sites for analysis and interpretation. In addition, gateway routers are organized and managed within a hierarchy that allows the monitoring function to localize it view of network conditions within the hierarchy; and the monitoring of network performance can occur on various time scales.
