Systems and methods are directed to multiview format detection. A multiview image that comprises a plurality of tiled view images is accessed. A cross-correlation map from the multiview image may be generated by autocorrelating the multiview image with a shifted copy of the multiview image. The cross-correlation map may be sampled at a plurality of predefined locations of the cross-correlation map to identify a set of cross-correlation values. A multiview format of the multiview image may be detected by classifying a feature set of the multiview image that comprises the set of cross-correlation values. The multiview image may be configured to be rendered on a multiview display based on the multiview format.

System and method of detecting multiview file format

A predictive head-tracking multiview display includes a multibeam backlight that provides a plurality of light beams having different principal angular directions corresponding to different view directions of a multiview image. A processor receives a plurality of provisional views of the multiview image. The provisional views correspond to the different view directions. The processor receives information about a predicted position of a user. The processor shifts the provisional views with respect to the view directions to form a plurality of shifted views that correspond to the different view directions. The shifted views are shifted by a shift value that varies as a function of the predicted position of the user and varies over a field of view of the multiview image. A light valve array modulates the plurality of light beams to provide the plurality of shifted views of the multiview image to the view directions as the multiview image.

Predictive head-tracking multiview display and method

Systems and methods are directed to a camera system configured to capture a multiview image of an object along an arc. Each camera in the camera system may correspond to a common field of view. In addition, a computing system coupled to the camera system may calculate a target camera baseline based on a first value and a second value, and dynamically adjust an inter-camera capture distance to match the target camera baseline. The first value may indicate the common field of view and the second value may indicate a distance between the camera system and the object.

Multiview image capture system and method

A time-multiplexed multiview backlight, display, and method of time-multiplexed multiview backlight operation provide one or both of enhanced spatial resolution and enhanced angular resolution using time-multiplexing. The time-multiplexed multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light as time-multiplexed guided light having different directions during different time intervals and an array of multibeam elements configured to scatter the time-multiplexed guided light as directional light beams. A first set of multibeam elements is configured to selectively scatter out the time-multiplexed guided light having the first direction and a second set of multibeam elements of the multibeam element array is configured to selectively scatter out the time-multiplexed guided light having the second direction. The time-multiplexed multiview display further includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams as view pixels of a multiview image having different views in the different view directions.

Time-multiplexed multiview backlight, multiview display and method

A multiview display and method employ an array of lenses to provide effective light sources from semi-collimated light. The multiview display includes a semi-collimated backlight configured to provide the semi-collimated light, an array of light valves arranged as multiview pixels, and an array of lenses disposed between the semi-collimated backlight and the array of lenses. Each lens of the array of lenses is configured to provide an effective light source at a focal plane of the lens to illuminate a corresponding multiview pixel.

Multiview display and method using effective light sources

Diffractive backlight fabrication employs a diffraction grating to scatter light from a light guide and define a reflective island that is aligned with the diffraction grating. A method of fabricating a diffractive backlight includes providing the light guide having the diffraction grating, diffractively scattering guided light out of the light guide using the diffraction grating to selectively expose photoresist and provide an opening in the photoresist, and depositing a reflective material into the opening to form a reflective island that is aligned with the diffraction grating. A reflective diffraction grating element of the diffractive backlight includes the diffraction grating and reflective island.

An adaptive background multiview image display system and method provides improved multiview image quality. Systems and methods may involve generating crosstalk data that reduces crosstalk between a first view of subject image and a second view of the subject image. The subject image may be a multiview image to be overlaid on a background image. A crosstalk violation may be detected in the subject image based on the crosstalk data. At least one of a color value or a brightness value of the background image is determined according to a degree of the crosstalk violation to generate the background image. The subject image may then be overlaid on the generated background image.

Multiview display system and method with adaptive background

A static-image augmented privacy display, mode-switchable privacy display system, and method provide a private image to a first view zone and a static image to a second view zone. The static-image augmented privacy display includes a privacy backlight configured to provide directional emitted light to the first view zone and an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional emitted light to provide a private image within the first view zone. The static-image augmented privacy display also includes a static display layer configured to provide a static image in a second view zone. The mode-switchable privacy display includes a broad-angle backlight configured to provide broad-angle emitted light to both a first view zone and a second view zone during a shared mode, a shared image being provided by modulation of the broad-angle emitted light using the light valve array.

Static-image augmented privacy display, mode-switchable privacy display system, and method

A horizontal parallax multiview display employs a plurality of slanted multibeam columns to scatter out of a light guide a plurality of directional light beams having principal angular directions corresponding to different view directions of the horizontal parallax multiview display. The plurality of directional light beams is modulated using an array of light valves to provide a multiview image having horizontal parallax. Further, the horizontal parallax multiview display employs a light control film having a slanted light control axis aligned with slanted multibeam columns of the slanted multibeam column plurality. The light control film is configured to control a view angle of the multiview image in a direction orthogonal to the horizontal parallax. The slanted multibeam columns may provide the multiview displays with a balanced resolution.

A multiview display employs an array of multibeam elements configured to provide directional light beams having different principal angular directions corresponding to different view directions of the multiview display. Moreover, the multiview display includes an array of light valves configured to modulate the directional light beams as a multiview image to be displayed by the multiview display, where a multiview pixel of the multiview display includes a set of light valves of the light valve array corresponding to a multibeam element of the multibeam element plurality and being configured to modulate directional light beams from the multibeam element. Furthermore, a shape of the multiview pixel is dynamically reconfigurable to provide the multiview image having a dynamic field of view (FOV). The FOV may be modified based on a monitored orientation of the multiview display, a monitored position of a user relative to the multiview display, or both.

A multiview backlight, multiview display, and method of multiview backlight operation include reflective multibeam elements configured to provide emitted light having directional light beams with directions corresponding to view directions of a multiview image. The multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and an array of the reflective multibeam elements. Each reflective multibeam element includes a plurality of reflective sub-elements and is configured to reflectively scatter out a portion of the guided light as the emitted light. The multiview display includes the multiview backlight and an array of light valves to modulate the directional light beams to provide the multiview image. Each reflective sub-element protrudes from a guiding surface of the light guide by a respective protrusion distance. At least some of the protrusion distances can vary as a function of distance along a length of the light guide.

A multiview display includes an array of light valves having rows of a repeating plurality of color sub-pixels and arranged as a plurality of multiview pixels configured to modulate directional light beams as color pixels of views of a multiview image. A first row of the repeating plurality of color sub-pixels is offset from a second row of the repeating plurality of color sub-pixels in a row direction by an integer multiple of a width of a color sub-pixel. The offset of the first and second rows is configured to provide corresponding color sub-pixels in adjacent multiview pixels having different colors to mitigate color fringing associated with the color pixel of the multiview image. The multiview display further includes a light control film configured to control a view angle of the multiview image.

A backlight scattering element, multiview display, and method of backlight scattering element operation employ a high-index light guide layer in conjunction with a light guide and diffraction grating to provide emitted light. The backlight scattering element includes a light guide that guides light as guided light and a high-index light guide layer optically connected to the light guide and configured to extend a thickness of the light guide. The backlight scattering element also includes a diffraction grating adjacent to the high-index light guide layer to diffractively scatter out a portion of the guided light as emitted light. The multiview display includes a light guide having a first layer and a second layer, a refractive index of the second layer being greater than a refractive index of the first layer. The multiview display may modulate diffractively scattered out directional light beams to provide a multiview image.

A user-tracking multiview display and a user-tracking multiview display system selectively provide a primary set of views and a secondary view according to a location of a user determined by a both a relative motion of the user-tracking multiview display and a periodic user location measurement. The user-tracking multiview display includes a multibeam backlight configured to provide directional light beams corresponding to different view directions of a multiview image and a light valve array configured to modulate the directional light beams to provide a plurality of views including the primary view set and the secondary view. The user-tracking multiview display system further includes a user tracker configured to determine a position of a user using both a periodic user location measurement and relative motion of the user-tracking multiview display system.

A multiview display and a method of multiview display operation employ an array of light valves having a repeating plurality of color sub-pixels and an array of multibeam emitters providing directional light beams. The array of light valves having the repeating plurality of color sub-pixels is configured to modulate the directional light beams as color pixels of views of a multiview image. A first multibeam emitter and a second multibeam emitter of the multibeam emitter array are offset from one another with respect to the array of light valves. The offset is configured to direct to a color pixel of the multiview image a modulated directional light beam from each of the first multibeam emitter and the second multibeam emitter having an equivalent angular direction relative to one another. The equivalent angular direction may mitigate color fringing within the color pixel.
