Film layers made from formulated polymer compositions are disclosed. Film layers made from such formulated compositions have surprisingly good (for example, low) water vapor transmission rates and are particularly useful for packaging dry goods such as cereal. The polymer compositions preferably have at least one homogeneous ethylene homopolymer and at least one heterogeneously branched ethylene polymer. The homogeneous ethylene homopolymer has a molecular weight much higher than that of the heterogeneously branched ethylene polymer, although the density of each is preferably higher than about 0.95 g/cm.

Film layers made from polymer formulations

The present invention pertains to a continuous process and polymerization system characterized by separate injection of catalyst and make-up feed, an ethylene interpolymer composition characterized as having broad molecular weight distribution (MWD) and optimized compositional uniformity, a process for making such a composition and a fabricated article made from such composition. The novel composition is characterized as having a melt flow ratio, I /I , from 8 to 30, a M /M of greater than 4 as determined by gel permeation chromatography, a melt index, I , from 0.01 to 1000 grams/10 minutes, preferably greater that 0.1 to 10 grams/10 minutes, and a density less than 0.945 g/cm . The novel composition exhibits good processibility and improved toughness properties, especially excellent film tear and impact resistance, and is particularly well-suited for use in applications such as high performance trash can liners and heavy duty shipping bags.

Broad MWD, compositionally uniform ethylene interpolymer compositions, process for making the same and article made therefrom

A solution polymerization system for polymerizing a olefin monomer by reacting the monomer with catalyst and solvent has been invented. The system in one aspect including a flow loop with a product polymer outlet, the flow loop forming a recycling reactor, a catalyst inlet on the flow loop through which catalyst and solvent flow into the flow loop, a monomer inlet on the flow loop through which monomer and solvent flow into the flow loop and, with the catalyst, form a reactant materials stream, a first heat exchanger on the flow loop for receiving the reactant materials stream and any formed polymer and for removing heat of reaction or polymerization from the flow loop, and pump apparatus for pumping the reactant materials stream and formed polymer in the flow loop and from the first heat exchanger to the product polymer outlet. In one aspect, the system includes at least one additional heat exchanger on the flow loop for receiving the reactant materials stream and formed polymer and for removing heat of reaction or polymerization from the flow loop, the pump apparatus pumping formed polymer and remaining reactant materials to the product polymer outlet, and a portion of the formed polymer and remaining reactant materials flowing out from the product polymer outlet and the remainder recycling through the flow loop. In one aspect systems and methods according to the present invention are used to make polyethylene.

Non-adiabatic olefin solution polymerization

A process and thermoplastic composition for high line speed extrusion without high neck-in and draw resonance are disclosed. The thermoplastic composition is made of at least one ethylene polymer having a Dow Rheology Index (DRI) of at least 0.1 or, alternately, at least one substantially linear ethylene polymer, used alone or in combination with at least one high-pressure ethylene polymer and/or with at least one heterogeneous linear olefin polymer.

High drawdown extrusion composition and process

A process for extruding a thermoplastic composition at higher drawdown rates with less neck-in and greater resistance to draw resonance as well as processes for extrusion coating a substrate and for making an extrusion-cast film are disclosed. The thermoplastic composition is made of at least one substantially linear ethylene polymer used alone or in combination with at least one high-pressure ethylene polymer and/or with at least one heterogeneous linear olefin polymer.

High drawdown extrusion process with greater resistance to draw resonance

A homogeneous, random interpolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid or ester having a melt flow rate in the range of about 0.1 to about 300 g/10 minutes, as determined by ASTM D-1238 (190.degree. C./2160 g), is improved during its manufacture when made in a substantially constant environment in a stirred autoclave under substantially steady-state conditions of temperature, pressure, and flow rates, said temperature and pressure being sufficient to produce a single phase reaction, using a free-radical initiator, said improvement being obtained by the use of a minor amount of a telogenic modifier in the reaction mixture, the process being further characterized by the use of either, or both, of (a) a temperature which is lower than that which would be required without the presence of the telogen, or (b) a pressure which is higher than that which would be required without the presence of the modifier.

Homogeneous, random interpolymers of ethylene and lesser amounts by weight of olefinically-unsaturated comonomers are prepared in a substantially constant environment, substantially steady-state reaction mixture, in a well-stirred autoclave reactor, in continuous single-phase operation, using elevated synthesis conditions wherein the temperature and pressure are elevated to an amount high enough to approach, reach, or surpass the molecular weight distribution boundary.
