A sintered article in which a solid body is at least partially embedded includes an opening. The solid body extends across the opening so that the solid body can deform within the opening. The opening in the solid body prevents distortion of the sintered body from a planar configuration during sintering, even when the green body that is sintered is relatively thin.

Sintered article, particularly for low ESR capacitor anodes

A method of making a sintered article in which a solid object is embedded includes forming a green body of compressed particles with the solid body is partially embedded. The green body includes an opening across which the solid body extends. The green body is sintered to form a sintered body and the opening permits deformation of the solid body in response to stress applied during the sintering process. A sintered article in which a solid body is at least partially embedded includes an opening. The solid body extends across the opening so that the solid body can deform within the opening. Sintering method, particularly for forming low ESR capacitor anodes

A high-voltage electrochemical-electrolytic capacitor. The capacitor includes a cathode comprising a plurality of electrically-conductive particles in intimate electrical contact with one another and disposed in a proton-conductive, electrically-non-conductive, solid ionomer matrix. The capacitor also includes an anode comprising a plurality of electrically-conductive particles in intimate electrical contact with one another and disposed in a proton-conductive, electrically-non-conductive solid ionomer matrix, the electrically-conductive particles of the anode differing in composition from the electrically-conductive particles of said cathode. The capacitor further includes a proton-conducting dielectric positioned between and in contact with each of the cathode and the anode, the proton-conducting dielectric comprising a solid ionomer. Preferably, the capacitor is assembled by constructing a first portion and a second portion, the first portion comprising the cathode and an extra thickness of solid ionomer on its inner surface, the second portion comprising the anode and an extra thickness of solid ionomer on its inner surface. When the first and second portions are brought together, the extended thicknesses of the solid ionomer jointly form the proton-conducting dielectric.

Electrochemical-electrolytic capacitor and method of making the same

A packaged hybrid capacitor according to the invention includes a metal cup having a bottom wall with a periphery and an upstanding sidewall at the periphery and surrounding the bottom wall; a first capacitor electrode located within the sidewall and on the bottom wall of the metal cup; an endless electrically insulating plastic sealing member having a base and an outer wall upstanding from the base, disposed within the metal cup, the outer wall having a shape and size fitting within the cup, adjacent the sidewall of the cup; a metal cover including a top wall and a peripheral skirt extending from and surrounding the top wall and inclined relative the top wall toward an inside surface of the metal cover; a second capacitor electrode on the inside surface of the top wall; a separator disposed between the first and second electrodes; and an electrolyte within the capacitor and in contact with the first and second capacitor electrodes, wherein the sidewall of the metal cup bears against the peripheral skirt, with the outer wall of the sealing member interposed between the sidewall and the peripheral skirt, sealing the packaged hybrid capacitor and electrically insulating the metal cup from the metal cover. The sealing member preferably has a channel shape, in cross-section, including an inner wall opposite the outer wall that is captured between the skirt of the cover and the sidewall of the cup. The sealing member is preferably a plastic polymeric material such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, silicone rubber, natural and synthetic rubbers, elastomers, polyvinyl chloride, and a moldable elastomer-polymer blend.

Packaged hybrid capacitor

A flat capacitor and a method of making the flat capacitor, the capacitor having a one-piece metal foil case. The capacitor includes a metal foil case with a flange, the case being made of a blank that is folded onto itself so the peripheral flanges are brought into mutual contact and welded. A lead extends from an anode within the capacitor through a hole in the capacitor case in the fold. An elastomeric body inserted in the hole and surrounding the lead provides electrical insulation and a seal is produced when the metal foil blank is folded to close the case of the capacitor. Preferably, the anode is a wet slug anode, such as sintered tantalum having an oxide coating, and the inside surface of the metal foil case is preferably coated with a porous metal oxide, such as ruthenium oxide, providing a capacitor with high energy storage density and breakdown voltage.

Prismatic capacitor

A capacitor includes a cathode having a coating including an oxide of one of cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten, a nitride of a metal selected from the group consisting of titanium, vanadium, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, and tungsten, a carbide of a metal selected from the group consisting of vanadium, niobium, molybdenum, and tungsten, an intercalation carbon cathode, or an electrically conducting polymer selected from polyacetylene, polypyrrole, poly-p-phenylene, polythiophene, poly-3-phenylthiophene, and poly-3-(4-fluorophenyl)-thiophene, an anode including a metal selected from tantalum, aluminum, niobium, zirconium, and titanium, spaced from the coating, and an electrolyte in contact with the coating and the anode.

Capacitor

A method of making a flat capacitor includes forming at least one recess on an inside surface of a metal foil blank, leaving a surrounding peripheral flange. A coating performing as an electrode of the capacitor is applied to the inside surface of the metal foil blank and an ion-permeable separator is placed on that inside surface of the metal foil blank. A substantially planar anode with a protruding lead is placed in the recess with the lead extending through a hole of the metal foil blank. Thereafter, the metal foil blank is folded along a line intersecting the hole so that the anode is sandwiched between parts of the separator and the separator is in contact with the coating on the inside surface of the metal foil blank. In the folding process, parts of the peripheral flange of the metal foil blank are brought into contact with each other and these parts are sealed to each other to form a hermetically sealed metal foil case of the capacitor.

Method of making a prismatic capacitor

A capacitor including a substantially planar electrochemical cathode including a porous coating; a spirally wound anode having an edge, the edge being disposed opposite and generally parallel to the cathode, the anode being selected from the group including tantalum, aluminum, niobium, zirconium, and titanium; an electrically insulating separator interposed between the cathode and the anode; and an electrolyte disposed between and in contact with the cathode and the anode.

Capacitor with spiral anode and planar cathode

A capacitor includes a cathode having a porous coating including an amorphous non-crystalline oxide of one of ruthenium, iridium, nickel, rhodium, rhenium, cobalt, tungsten, manganese, tantalum, molybdenum, lead, titanium, platinum, palladium, and osmium; an anode including a metal selected from the group consisting of tantalum, aluminum, niobium, zirconium, and titanium, provided the cathode and the anode metals are different, spaced from the porous coating; and an electrolyte in contact with the porous coating and the anode.

An electrochemical capacitor is disclosed that features two, separated, high surface area carbon cloth electrodes sandwiched between two current collectors fabricated of a conductive polymer having a flow temperature greater than 130.degree. C., the perimeter of the electrochemical capacitor being sealed with a high temperature gasket to form a single cell device. The gasket material is a thermoplastic stable at temperatures greater than 100.degree. C., preferably a polyester or a polyurethane, and having a reflow temperature above 130.degree. C. but below the softening temperature of the current collector material. The capacitor packaging has good mechanical integrity over a wide temperature range, contributes little to the device equivalent series resistance (ESR), and is stable at high potentials. In addition, the packaging is designed to be easily manufacturable by assembly line methods. The individual cells can be stacked in parallel or series configuration to reach the desired device voltage and capacitance.

Nonaqueous electrical storage device

A packaged electrical component includes a tubular body having first and second ends and an opening at the first end for receiving an electrical component; an electrical component disposed within the tubular body; an end cap mounted on the first end of the tubular body, closing the opening; and a fluid-filled pressure-applying element disposed within the tubular body between the end cap and the electrical component, applying pressure to the electrical component within the tubular body. The fluid-filled pressure-applying element is preferably a variable volume container that contains a gas, a liquid, or a solid produced by curing of a liquid. A fluid is injected into the container after assembly of the package so that a uniform pressure is applied to the component compensating for thickness non-uniformities of the component. Assembly is simplified since the element is pressurized after assembly of the package rather than while the package is being manufactured.
