A faceted gemstone having at least one thin layer of material coated on the pavilion of a transparent substrate so that the body of the gemstone appears to have a different color. The color of reflected light changes hues when viewed through the face of the gemstone at different angles of observation. This causes the gemstone to appear to change color when the stone is tilted. The thin film is coated by low temperature techniques such as sputtering.

Method of improving the color of transparent materials

A vacuum deposition system is shown in the form of a sputtering system for rigid disk substrates which uses a single vacuum envelope and a single transport to avoid multiple pump downs or valved isolation structures during the multiple coating processes or the transfer of workpieces between conveyer devices. Work stations carried by a modular processing unit provide a slotted opening through which work pieces supported on the transport enter and leave the work station and which affords sufficient restriction to enable a processing gas atmosphere to be maintained within the work station that is above the pressure of the vacuum envelope while being isolated from the adjoining work stations. The work stations are supported on and readily releasable from the modular processing units to allow service and target replacement to occur offline. The work station process steps that are of longest duration are partitioned to be performed at multiple successive work stations to make work station processing times as equal as possible and enhance system throughput.

Method and apparatus for coating thin film data storage disks

The magnetic properties of a cobalt based, thin film, magnetic recording layer are controlled, independent of controlling the process for depositing the magnetic layer itself, by the introduction of process compatible dopant gases into an argon atmosphere during the vacuum deposition (i.e. a sputtering process or an evaporation process) of a chromium based underlayer upon which the magnetic layer is subsequently deposited. The same or a different dopant may also be introduced into the magnetic layer. The process compatible dopant gases described contain oxygen, nitrogen and/or carbon, and mixtures thereof, and include the group purified air, oxygen, nitrogen, a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor.

Underlayer doping in thin film magnetic recording media

A fabrication method and structure for a cobalt alloy thin film magnetic recording media uses an underlayer of sputter deposited chromium having a thickness of 50 to 200 angstroms which presents the (100) plane of the chromium atoms at the surface upon which the cobalt alloy magnetic thin film layer is to be deposited. The cobalt alloy hexagonal close packed atomic structure is sputtered onto the chromium underlayer and epitaxially grown such that the (110) plane of the cobalt alloy structure is parallel to the media surface. This disposes the cobalt magnetic layer structure to have the C axis (easiest axis of the magnetization) parallel to the media surface to optimize horizontal recording density.
