The invention provides a method for the at least partial removal of one or more polymeric coating layers from a coated substrate having at least one coated surface. The method includes generating at least one reactive species in an ionized gas stream discharged at atmospheric pressure; and placing the coated surface in the ionized gas stream. The at least one reactive species reacts with the one or more polymeric coating layers such that one or more coating layers is at least partially removed from the coated surface of the substrate at atmospheric pressure.

Coating compositions comprising a polymer and an initiator are disclosed. The polymer comprises an alkyd portion and a free radical curable portion that is pendant from the alkyd portion; the alkyd portion includes one or more fatty acid moieties that can be derived from one or more drying, semi-drying or nondrying oils. When drying or semi-drying oils are used, the molecules of the present invention exhibit a dual cure, both oxidative and free radical. The compositions are particularly suitable for coating substrates comprising wood. Methods for using the present compositions are also disclosed.

Novel compositions comprising photoactive polymers comprising a dinitrobenzyl group in conjunction with a photoacid generator are disclosed. In one embodiment, the photoacid generator is a diazide and/or a sulfonyl aceto carbonyl compound. The photoacid generators are typically used in amounts of 10 weight percent or less. The compositions find particular application in storage stable, pH stable, and water stable positive photoresist compositions. Such compositions demonstrate reduced process time as compared with similar compositions lacking the photoacid generator. Methods for using these compositions are also disclosed.

Disclosed is a radiation curable composition which includes: (a) an unsaturated ester compound, and (b) a pulverizable vinyl ether compound. The unsaturated ester compound is characterized as having a plurality of unsaturated ester groups per molecule. Accordingly, in the stabilized radiation curable coating compositions of this invention, polymerization of the vinyl ether compound is substantially avoided until blended with the unsaturated ester compound and exposed to radiation.

Very low gloss finishes are attained in pigmented, radiation curable coatings by inclusion of a combination of photoinitiators having an acylphosphine oxide photoinitiator and a second photoinitiator such as an acetophenone derivative. In the method of producing the low gloss finishes, the coating is first exposed to ionizing radiation (e.g., electron beam) in air, then exposed to actinic radiation (ultraviolet light) in an essentially inert atmosphere.
