A circular stapling instrument is provided. The circular stapling instrument includes a handle forming a cavity, a reciprocating drive shaft, a carrier cover, and a shaft assembly. The reciprocating drive shaft is detachably secured within the cavity of the handle. The carrier cover covers a portion of the reciprocating drive shaft within the cavity of the handle. The shaft assembly is detachably coupled with the handle.

Surgical devices and methods for operating surgical devices during a surgical procedure are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a surgical device is provided having a handle housing with an elongate shaft, an end effector on the distal end of the elongate shaft, a drive assembly, and a trigger coupled to the handle housing. Various overload mechanisms are provided for transferring a closing force from the trigger to the drive assembly unless the closing force exceeds a predetermined threshold force in which case the overload mechanism prevents transfer of the closing force to the drive assembly.

An anvil assembly for a circular stapling instrument is provided. The anvil assembly includes a one-piece, polymer anvil and a staple-forming surface. The one-piece, polymer anvil comprises an anvil base surface and an anvil shaft extending from the anvil base surface. The staple-forming surface is attached to the anvil base surface.

A circular stapling instrument is provided which includes a reciprocating drive shaft and a firing bar. The reciprocating drive shaft has a first engagement member at a tip of the reciprocating drive shaft and a threaded adjustment member at a base of the reciprocating drive shaft. The firing bar is movably connected at a first end with a firing trigger and movably connected at a second end with a stapling head assembly through a second engagement member. The firing bar forms a first engagement surface which faces a respective second engagement surface formed on the reciprocating drive shaft. The circular stapling instrument also includes a frictional reducing member located in between the first and second engagement surfaces in order to reduce friction between the reciprocating drive shaft and the firing bar.

A circular stapling instrument includes a casing, an anvil assembly, a staple driver, and a locking mechanism. The anvil assembly is configured to move back and forth between an open position away from the casing and a closed position adjacent the casing. The staple driver is configured to move within the casing from a pre-fired position to a fired position. The locking mechanism is configured to, whenever the anvil assembly is in the open position, automatically lock the staple driver in the pre-fired position preventing the staple driver from being moved to the fired position. The locking mechanism is also configured to, whenever the anvil assembly is in the closed position, automatically unlock the staple driver from the pre-fired position to allow the staple driver to be moved to the fired position.

A filter assembly has an outer member and an inner member. The outer member is configured to allow a vacuum to be communicated through the outer member. The outer member comprises hydrophobic material and an interior cavity. The hydrophobic material is configured to substantially repel fluids at atmospheric pressure. At least a portion of the inner member is positioned within the interior cavity of the outer member. The inner member comprises occluding media configured to absorb fluids both at atmospheric pressure and when a vacuum is being communicated through the inner member. The filter assembly may be incorporated within a vacuum canister to be used in conjunction with a biopsy device as part of a biopsy system, although other suitable applications will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art in view of the teachings herein.

A biopsy system includes a biopsy device, a vacuum canister, a vacuum control module, and a plurality of tubes. A first tube is configured to provide an axial vacuum to the biopsy device, while a second tube is configured to provide a lateral vacuum. A third tube is configured to communicate atmospheric air to the second tube. A fourth tube is configured to communicate saline to the second tube. The vacuum canister is configured to collect fluids drawn through the first tube and the second tube. The canister has a lid with trenches formed in it for retaining the first, second, third, and fourth tubes. The lid also has engagement regions for selectively pinching each of the tubes against to prevent fluid communication through selected tubes. The canister can be removably inserted into the vacuum control module, which includes components for selectively pinching the tubes against the engagement regions.
