An apparatus may include a device and an image projection system configured to form an image on a surface viewable by a user. The image projection circuit may be configured to receive signals from the device, generate a pattern representative of data, process the pattern into a mirror image of the image, and project the mirror image from the device. The image projection system may include an electro optic system for generating the pattern, and an optics system for projecting the mirror image onto the surface. A method for projecting data may include providing the device with the image, and providing the image to the surface with the image projection system. The method may also include manipulating the device and/or a body part to locate and focus the image, sensing an orientation of the device, and orienting the image based, at least in part, on the sensing step.

A radio frequency communication device and methods of testing and tuning an antenna attached thereto are described. A radio frequency communication device comprises internal circuitry and an antenna having a plurality of antenna segments associated therewith. Each antenna segment is associated with the antenna in either series or parallel relation through at least one of a fuse and an antifuse. In testing and tuning, a comparison is made to indicate whether the antenna is too short or too long.

A radio frequency communication device and method are disclosed. In one aspect, an RFID tag includes an adjustable antenna having a main segment and one or more additional segments that are short relative to the main segment; and the antenna is adjustable to electrically isolate one or more of the additional segments from the main segment. In another aspect, an RFID tag includes an antenna having a first section and a second section short relative to the first section; and the antenna is adjustable to disconnect the first and second sections from each other at a predetermined location. In a further aspect, an RFID tag includes an antenna having a first section and a second section; and the first section is adjustable to decrease the first length of the first section and the second section adjustable to increase the second length of the second section.

Method and device for preventing junction leakage in field emission devices

A portable phone includes a handset and a data projection system configured to form a visual image of data, such as caller waiting ID data, on a viewing surface viewable by a user during a two way conversation. The handset also includes a speaker, a microphone, conventional phone circuitry and a keyboard. The data projection system is configured to receive signals from the phone circuitry, to generate a pattern representative of the data, to process the pattern into a mirror image of the visual image, and to project the mirror image from a bottom end surface of the handset. The projection system includes an electro optic system for generating the pattern, and an optics system for projecting the mirror image onto the viewing surface. A method for projecting data in a portable phone includes the steps of: providing the handset with the data projection system, conducting a two way conversation with the handset held against the head of the user, and forming the visual image on the viewing surface during the two way conversation with the handset held against the head. The method can also include the steps of manipulating the handset and a body part to locate and focus the visual image, sensing an orientation of the handset during the two way conversation, and orienting the visual image as a function of the sensing step.

According to one aspect of the invention, a field emission display is provided comprising: an anode; a phosphor screen located on the anode; a cathode; an evacuated space between the anode and the cathode; an emitter located on the cathode opposite the phosphor; wherein the emitter comprises an electropositive element both in a body of the emitter and on a surface of the emitter. According to another aspect of the invention, a process for manufacturing a FED is provided comprising the steps of forming an emitter comprising an electropositive element in the body of the tip; positioning the emitter in opposing relation to a phosphor display screen; creating an evacuated space between the emitter tip and the phosphor display screen; and causing the electropositive element to migrate to an emission surface of the emitter.

Low work function emitters and method for production of FED's

A method is provided for forming and associating a lower section of a large-area field emission device ('FED') that is sealed under a predetermined level of vacuum pressure with an upper section of a large-area FED. The upper section of the FED includes a faceplate. A first conductive layer is disposed on a surface of the faceplate. A matrix member is disposed on a surface of the first conductive layer, and cathodoluminescent material is disposed on the first conductive layer in areas not covered by the matrix member. The method includes disposing a plurality of spacers between the upper and lower sections of the FED to provide a predetermined separation between the upper and lower sections, with the spacers having cross-sectional shapes commensurate with stresses exerted on the spacers and/or heights commensurate with stresses exerted on the spacers. Resulting FED structures are disclosed.

Method for making large-area FED apparatus

A radio frequency communication device and method for tuning an antenna attached thereto are disclosed. A radio frequency communication device is disclosed comprising internal circuitry and an antenna having a plurality of antenna segments associated therewith. Each antenna segment is associated with the antenna in either series or parallel relation through at least one of a fuse and an antifuse. In testing and tuning, a comparison is made to indicate whether the antenna is too short or too long. If the antenna is too short, an antenna segment may be attached to the antenna by initiating an antifuse. If it is indeterminate whether the antenna is too short or too long, an antenna segment may be either attached or detached, the test repeated, and the results of the repeated test compared with the prior test to determine whether the correct action was taken.

The disclosed method for forming a field emission display includes forming a cathode and an anode, forming a plurality of photoresist posts over the cathode, and coating the posts with a layer of coating material. The layer of coating material forms sidewalls around the posts. The photoresist posts may then be removed from within the sidewalls. The anode may then be fitted onto the sidewalls so that the sidewalls function as spacers in the field emission display.

A remote keyboard has keys which are illuminated for identification under a dim motherboard. For a first embodiment of the invention, the identifying symbol or symbols on each key cap of the keyboard is formed from luminescent material. Alternatively, the symbol or symbols on each key cap are formed from a translucent material in which tritium is embedded. Tritium, which has a half-life of about 12.5 years, emits low-energy beta particle radiation. The radiation, which is of sufficiently low energy that it may be blocked by a piece of paper, may be rendered innocuous by placing clear plastic radiation shields over each key cap. For a second embodiment of the invention, the key caps themselves are molded from luminescent material, while the symbols are formed from contrasting black or dark-colored non-luminescent material. A third embodiment of the invention utilizes fiber optics to convey light from at least one low-power source, such as a light-emitting diode, to each of the various key caps, each of which is molded from a translucent material. The symbols on the key caps are of a color which contrasts with that of the key caps. Black letters on light colored translucent key caps are the preferred combination. Another embodiment of the present invention for backlighting a keyboard is to use a transparent projector pane positioned beneath translucent or transparent key caps on which identifying symbols are printed. Light from a light source at the edge of the projector pane is transmitted throughout the pane. An aperture beneath each key top projects light up through the key caps, illuminating the symbols.

Electron emitters and a method of fabricating emitters are disclosed, having a concentration gradient of impurities, such that the highest concentration of impurities is at the apex of the emitters and decreases toward the base of the emitters. The method comprises the steps of doping, patterning, etching, and oxidizing the substrate, thereby forming the emitters having impurity gradients.
