A method for coating a surface mount package is provided. The method includes applying a layer of a coating material above at least one surface of the surface mount package, applying a masking material above the layer of coating material, and removing the layer of coating material from a selected portion of the surface mount package defined by the masking material.

Method and apparatus for applying external coating to grid array packages for increased reliability and performance

A fiber optic sensor coil and method of forming a fiber optic sensor coil including a plurality of turns of a first segment of optical fiber wound in a clockwise direction and a plurality of turns of a second segment of optical fiber wound in the counterclockwise direction. The turns of the first segment and of the second segment together forming a plurality of layers of turns of the optical fiber. A restraining ring covers an outermost layer of the plurality of layers of turns of optical fiber. The restraining ring includes a plurality of openings formed therein and provides a compressive force to the plurality of turns of the optical fiber.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for selective removal of a conformal coating from the solder balls of grid array packages such that the benefits of the coating are realized. An ancillary benefit of the invention is improved process-ability of the grid array package by improving the mechanical containment of the solder during the reflow process and improved electrical isolation between the individual solder attachment points. For example, a method for coating a ball grid array is provided, which includes coating the ball grid array with a thin layer of parylene. Next, the solder ball side of the part is butter smeared or squeegeed with a water soluble coating and assembled wet. A mask having holes in the same pattern as the balls in the grid, and a thickness that is about 80% of the height of the balls, is applied to the solder ball side of the part. This side of the part is then butter smeared again with the water soluble coating, and the entire assembly is allowed to dry. At this point, about 20% of each parylene-coated solder ball protrudes higher than the surface of the mask. The solder ball side of the part is then grit blasted with an abrasive material. The extent that the abrasive material removes the parylene coating from the solder balls is limited by the mask and the layer of water soluble coating. Therefore, the grit blasting removes the parylene coating from only the protruding areas (e.g., about top 20%) of the solder balls. Water is then used to remove the water soluble coating, and the parylene coated part is baked to remove moisture. Thus, a parylene coated ball grid array (or column grid array) is provided that is highly impervious to moisture, has a very high dielectric strength, and thereby improves the electrical performance and reliability of the surface mounted part.

A method for forming an electrode seal between an excitation electrode and a laser block in a ring laser gyro having increased bond durability, strength, and greater resistance to solvents and reactive compounds. A thin ring of sealing material is positioned between an excitation electrode and a laser block of the ring laser gyro, and the sealing material is compressed. Chemical and physical bonds are formed between the excitation electrode and the sealing material and between the sealing material and the laser block. A pre-determined electrical potential is applied across the excitation electrode, the sealing material, and the laser block for a pre-determined period of time and at a pre-determined temperature. The electrical potential increases the number of chemical and physical bonds that are formed at the seal, thus increasing the bond durability and strength.

Method for anodically bonding an electrode to a ring laser gyro block

A thin bed sorption/desorption apparatus includes a heater element laminated within a high temperature chemically inert polymer with an adhesive on the outside of the laminate being used to attach a thin film of small particle size sorptive material. Various embodiments of the apparatus are each arranged to provide a flow of a sample to be analyzed across the surface of the sorptive material. The method for making the thin bed sorption/desorption apparatus includes the steps of encapsulating a thin-film heater element in a laminated structure of a polyimide which is a high temperature, chemically inert polymer. The outside surface of the laminate is coated with a polyimide adhesive which is diluted with dimethyl formamide. The sorptive material in the form of a powder having a maximum particle size of 100 mesh is applied to the wet adhesive. Subsequently, the coated structure is heat cured at approximately 220.degree. C. for a period of approximately 30 minutes until the adhesive is dry and the sorptive material layer is fixed to the laminate.
