A water savings system and method for reducing the amount of water needed for adiabatic cooling including the use of a softener and a reverse osmosis device, in which tap water, softened if necessary, is delivered to a reverse osmosis device and softened water alone, reverse osmosis reject water, or softened water combined with reverse osmosis reject water is delivered to spray nozzles for cooling, and reverse osmosis pure water is stored and used periodically to flush the coils to inhibit and/or prevent corrosion from dissolved salts and other solids in the spray water.

A hybrid heat exchanger apparatus having a heat exchanger device with a hot fluid flowing therethrough includes a cooling water distribution system and an air flow mechanism for causing ambient air to flow across the heat exchanger device. The cooling water distribution system distributes evaporative cooling water onto the heat exchanger device to wet only a portion of the heat exchanger device while allowing a remaining portion of the heat exchanger device to be dry. The air flow mechanism causes ambient air to flow across the heat exchanger device to generate hot humid air from the ambient air flowing across the wet portion of the heat exchanger device and hot dry air from the ambient air flowing across the remaining dry portion of the heat exchanger device. Methods are also described.

Additive manufactured header for heat exchangers

An air-over evaporative heat exchanger with multi-lobed or 'peanut' shaped tubes replacing conventional round or elliptical tubes. The tubes have a narrow horizontal cross section and tall vertical cross section to allow the multiplication of surface area in the same coil volume while maintaining or increasing the open-air passage area. This configuration allows the coil to have an overall external heat transfer coefficient much higher than a conventional coil, while the tube shape allows the use of thinner material, reducing the weight and cost of the heat exchanger.

Multi-cavity tubes for air-over evaporative heat exchanger

An internal melt ice thermal storage device having an ice build/melt coils with tubes fitted with extensions or 'fins' that transfer heat from the thermal transfer medium in the tubes to distal portions of the ice rings that surround said tubes in order to define the shape of the liquid meniscus between the tube and ice allowing the ice to break free from the tube near the initiation of melt.

Thermal storage ice breaker apparatus

A method and apparatus for removing and replacing an integral-motor fan from below. A support assembly has support struts fixed to a mounting ring. Mounting ring is configured to be fixed to the fan head, holding the fan in place, and support struts are configured to rest on mounting bolts fixed to a fan shroud. To mount a fan in place from below, the fan is fixed to the mounting ring of the support assembly, and the support assembly and attached fan are lifted into the fan shroud. The support assembly is rotated until the struts align with the support bolts in the fan shroud. The support assembly is then lowered until the struts come to rest on the support bolts. A power cable with a length sufficient to lower the fan support assembly out of the fan shroud prior to disconnecting the power cable from the fan body.

Bi-directional fill for use in cooling towers

Heat is indirectly transferred between a process fluid and ambient air in apparatus that includes an evaporative heat transfer cell operative in a wet mode or a dry mode, a dry heat transfer cell and a fan. The air may bypass the dry heat transfer cell to flow through a first air passage or may flow through a second air passage through the dry heat transfer cell and in either event, then through the evaporative heat transfer cell. The air may partially flow through and partially bypass the dry heat transfer cell, and then through the evaporative heat transfer cell. The evaporative heat transfer cell optionally may include a direct contact evaporative heat exchanger.
