A transmission x-ray tube comprising an end window hermetically sealed to a flexible coupling. The flexible coupling can allow the window to shift or tilt in one direction or another direction to allow an electron beam to impinge upon one region of the window or another region of the window. A method of utilizing different regions of an x-ray tube target by tilting an x-ray tube window at an acute angle with respect to an electron beam axis to cause an electron beam to impinge on a selected region of the window and tilting the window in a different direction to allow the electron beam to impinge on a different selected region of the window.

A compact x-ray source can include a circuit () providing reliable voltage isolation between low and high voltage sides () of the circuit while allowing AC power transfer between the low and high voltage sides of the circuit to an x-ray tube electron emitter (). Capacitors () can provide the isolation between the low and high voltage sides of the circuit. The x-ray source () can utilize capacitors of a high voltage generator () to provide the voltage isolation. A compact x-ray source () can comprise a single transformer core () to transfer alternating current from two alternating current sources () to an electron emitter () and a high voltage generator (). A compact x-ray source () can comprise a high voltage sensing resistor (R) disposed on a cylinder () of an x-ray tube ().

A high voltage circuit with arc protection comprises a circuit board, having a top surface and a bottom surface, and includes at least two electronic components in a circuit. An enclosure substantially surrounds the circuit board. A voltage differential of at least 5000 volts can exist between the enclosure and at least one of the electronic components. At least one electrically conductive plate is disposed between the top surface of the circuit board and the enclosure, disposed between the bottom surface of the circuit board and the enclosure, electrically insulated from the circuit board and the enclosure, and provides arc protection between at least one electronic component on the circuit board and the enclosure.

An x-ray source can include an x-ray tube and a power supply. The x-ray tube can be removably affixed to the power supply in a rigid manner with the x-ray tube movable and holdable along with the power supply when affixed thereto. A releasable coupling between the x-ray tube and the power supply can create an interface defining a potential arc path. A means, such as a non-linear plug and socket junction, a gasket, or an electrically conductive sleeve, can be used for resisting arcing along the potential arc path.

A cold electron number amplifier device can provide a greater number of electrons at lower electron emitter temperature. The cold electron number amplifier device can comprise an evacuated enclosure, a first electron emitterattached to the evacuated enclosure, and an electrically conductive second electron emitteralso attached to the evacuated enclosure. The first electron emittercan be configured to emit electronswithin the evacuated enclosure. The second electron emittercan have a voltage Vgreater than a voltage Vof the first electron emitter(V&#x3e;V). The second electron emittercan be positioned to receive impinging electronsfrom the first electron emitter. Electronsfrom the first electron emittercan impart energy to electrons in the second electron emitterand cause the second electron emitterto emit more electrons

Cold electron number amplifier

A circuit providing reliable voltage isolation between a low and high voltage sides of a circuit while allowing AC power transfer between the low and high voltage sides of the circuit to an x-ray tube filament. Capacitors provide the isolation between the low and high voltage sides of the circuit.
