Methods and systems for detecting personally identifiable information in data associated with a cloud computing system are described. An example method includes ingesting the data associated with the cloud computing system to generate source data. The method includes processing the source data by: performing cell-based de-duplication to generate cell-based de-duplicated data, subjecting the cell-based de-duplicated data to regular expression classification to generate a first subset of initial results, tokenizing the cell-based de-duplicated data to generate tokenized data, and de-duplicating the tokenized data and subjecting de-duplicated tokenized data to a first named entity recognition classification to generate a second subset of the initial results. The method includes cross-referencing the cell-based de-duplicated data and the initial results and subjecting output of the cross-referencing to a second named entity recognition classification to generate final results. The method includes processing the final results to detect any personally identifiable information in the final results.

Techniques for monitoring presence of a remote device at Layer 2 that allow reducing power consumption without compromising the device's availability. A device that pairs with a remote wireless device may establish a Layer 3 connection, such as an IP connection, to the remote device to provide services to a user. The Layer 3 connection may be formed over a Layer 2 connection via an access point or as a peer-to-peer wireless connection between the devices. When the Layer 3 connection is not actively used to access the remote device, the Layer 3 connection and the supporting Layer 2 connection (e.g., WI-FI, WI-FI DIRECT&#x2122; or BLUETOOTH&#xae;) may be terminated and presence of the remote device may be monitored using a Layer 2 device discovery mechanism. The Layer 2 and Layer 3 connections to the device may be reestablished when use of the remote device is desired.

Detecting device presence for a layer 3 connection using layer 2 discovery information

Techniques for guaranteeing that a software program is executed on a machine only during designated periods of time are provided. Service windows define time periods during which software programs targeted to execute on a machine are allowed to execute on the machine. On the machine, the service windows work in conjunction with a client process that is executing on the machine to guarantee execution of the software programs by the client process only during available service windows.

Files, or other data, may be stored in a package, and the contents of the package may be retrieved incrementally and/or on-demand. In one example, files are packaged into a ZIP file or similar type of package. Additionally, metadata is added to the package that describes the contents of the package at the sub-file level, thereby allowing portions of files to be retrieved by appropriately-configured software. When the package is to be used on a local machine, placeholder files may be created on that machine, which are to be populated by the package's contents at a later time. When a request for data in the package is made, if the data does not reside locally, then a request for the specific data (possibly at the sub-file level) is made, and the placeholder files are populated with the actual package data.

The techniques allow reducing power consumption without compromising the device's availability. A device that pairs with a remote wireless device may establish a Layer 3 connection to the remote device to provide services to a user. The Layer 3 connection and underlying Layer 2 connection (e.g., WI-FI, WI-FI DIRECT&#x2122; or BLUETOOTH&#xae;) may be terminated when the Layer 3 connection is not actively used. Once use of the remote device is desired, its presence may be detected using a Layer 2 device discovery mechanism and the Layer 2 and Layer 3 connections to the device may be reestablished. Services provided at Layer 3, such as steaming data, may then be performed over the reestablished Layer 3 connection.

Event-driven detection of device presence for layer 3 services using layer 2 discovery information

One or more extension registrations are received for each of multiple software components installed on a computing device. The one or more extension registrations identify the software components as providers of functionality. A record of the one or more extension registrations for each of the multiple software components is maintained. Requests are received, from other software components installed on the computing device, that identify particular functionality. In response to such requests, the information regarding one or more of the multiple software components that provide the particular functionality is returned to the other software components.
