A method for sorting objects using a continuous loop conveyor sorting system having two or more feeders. In one embodiment, the method includes sorting a batch of objects to form a first group of objects and a second group of objects, using a first feeder to feed all of the objects from the first group onto the conveyor, using a second feeder to feed all of the objects from the second group onto the conveyor, removing the objects from the first group from the conveyor prior to the any of the objects reaching the point at which the second feeder feeds objects onto the conveyor, and removing the objects from the second group from the conveyor prior to the any of the objects reaching the point at which the first feeder feeds objects onto the conveyor.

Process for sorting objects

The mail sorting systems and methods of the invention can be used to provide a mail carrier with a batch of mail that is arranged in delivery point order and separated by delivery point. Advantageously, the systems and methods employ an expandable, transportable container having a number of expandable compartments. Each expandable compartment holds the mail for a single delivery point.

System and method for delivery point packaging

Pre-packaging of flats mail by mailers, printers, and binding houses is provided by a carrier assembly that provides optimum shipping volumes while requiring reduced handling at postal facilities at elevated rates while supporting both manual and automated mail processing. The carrier assembly consists of a substantially rigid carrier body of rectangular cross section and includes a plurality, at least two, of generally flat, rectangular side walls and at least one end wall, two or more of which have one or a pair of banding guide slots formed in respective outer edges thereof in mutual registration for receiving banding or other strapping means in either parallel or cross-banding arrangements for securing mail loaded therein.

A method and an apparatus for collating a plurality of groups of mail items, such as flats mail, each group being pre-sequenced according to prioritized delivery addresses, into a final sequenced set of the mail items from the groups, utilizing the prioritized delivery addresses. Each bundle of mail items is formed into a single input stream of the individual mail items. The mail items are transported along a conveyor system from the input stream to a staging station. The mail items are sorted at the staging station into a plurality of subsets of mail items re-sequenced as an intermediate step to achieving the final sequenced sets. The mail items are then collated and merged into a single output stream from the respective subsets of mail items in the final sequenced set. Portions of the output stream from the staging station are collected in batches which maintain the sequence consistent with the prioritized delivery order sequence of the mail for a given carrier route.

Flats bundle collator

A method and system for collating groups of flats mail items for a plurality of carrier routes into carrier walk order sequence (CWS) using a Flats Bundle Collator (FBC) system which is capable of pre-staging carrier route subsets in one or more staging towers, or immediately collating a group into CWS for a group being fed into the system. The pre-staged subsets can be collated by the staging towers on demand. A U-shaped footprint for the FBC facilitates loading and unloading by the same operator. Additional input feeders may be added to the modular FBC, as well as random sequence towers.

Expanded flats bundle collator

A plurality of staging tower assemblies disposed above a conveyor for storing items therein and, more particularly flats mail items, which are then collated in any selected order. Each tower assembly has a plurality of independently operable endless belts below, above, and in a transition zone along the conveyor. The endless belts are driven according to a selected order of collation by a computerized controller.

A method and system for re-sequencing mail prepared in enhanced carrier route line of travel (ECR-LOT) format into carrier walk sequence (CWS) format within a flat bundle collator (FBC) system. The mail items in LOT are separated into subsets, one subset being in the same order as CWS, and another subset being in reverse order to CWS. All items from all groups are then merged into a stream of items in CWS for delivery by mail carriers.

A method for detecting a target substance which includes collecting a substance sample; introducing the substance sample into a substance card having at least one reagent responsive to the presence of the target substance and having a light-transmissive chamber; inserting the substance card into a substance detector device having a photosensor and adapted to receive the substance card; mixing the substance sample with the reagents for a preselected mixing period, thus producing a measurand having a target substance reaction; streaming the measurand through the light-transmissive chamber and illuminating the measurand with a quantity of light for a selectable analysis period, an optical characteristic of the measurand can be measured with the photosensor; and selecting the target substance reaction as a positive reaction or a negative reaction, responsive to the optical characteristic. If the target substance reaction is a negative reaction, the device operator is signalled thereof. On the other hand, if the target substance reaction is the positive reaction, the streaming, illuminating, measuring, and selecting steps are repeated for a selectable number of repetitions. If the target substance reaction remains positive after exhausting the selectable number of repetitions, the device operator is signalled of the positive reaction.
