Systems and methods for low-manganese welding alloys are disclosed. An example arc welding consumable may comprise: between 0.4 and 1.0 wt % manganese; strengthening agents selected from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt, copper, carbon, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, silicon, and boron; and grain control agents selected from the group consisting of niobium, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, and boron. The grain control agents may comprise greater than 0.06 wt % and less than 0.6 wt % of the welding consumable. The resulting weld deposit may comprise a tensile strength greater than or equal to 70 ksi, a yield strength greater than or equal to 58 ksi, a ductility (as measured by percent elongation) of at least 22%, and a Charpy V-notch toughness greater than or equal to 20 ft-lbs at −20° F. The welding consumable may provide a manganese fume generation rate less than 0.01 grams per minute during the arc welding operation.

Systems and methods for low-manganese welding alloys

The invention relates generally to welding and, more specifically, to welding wires for arc welding, such as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) or Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW). In one embodiment, a tubular welding wire includes a sheath and a core. The tubular welding wire is configured to form a weld deposit on a structural steel workpiece, wherein the weld deposit includes less than approximately 2.5% manganese by weight.

This disclosure relates generally to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and, more specifically, to Metal-cored Arc Welding (MCAW) of mill scaled steel workpieces. A metal-cored welding wire, including a sheath and a core, capable of welding mill scaled workpieces without prior descaling is disclosed. The metal-cored welding wire has a sulfur source that occupies between approximately 0.04% and approximately 0.18% of the weight of the metal-cored welding wire, and has a cellulose source that occupies between approximately 0.09% and approximately 0.54% of the weight of the metal-cored welding wire.

Provided is a welding wire and method for manufacturing a welding wire providing for quality welds on 300 series stainless steel and similar materials. A metal powder core is encapsulated in a metal sheath. The metal sheath composition comprising up to about 6% nickel, by weight, and may correspond to a series 400 stainless steel. A combination of the metal sheath and the metal powder core provides an overall alloy content of a series 300 stainless steel.

Sheathed welding wire

The gas-metal arc welding of metal-core wile electrodes in the pure Ar shielding gas for carbon steel, low alloy steel, and ferritic stainless steel is described. Such shielding gas provides several benefits not realized ??the gas-metal arc welding process with solid wires. When compared to standard argon/oxygen containing gas mixtures normally used for metal cored wires, these benefits include reduced silicate islands on the weld surface for improved weld appearance, reduced welding fume, and lower weld spatter, all of which provide easier clean-up after the welding operation. Benefits also include reduced arc penetration desirable for welding on thinner materials or handling poor joint fit-up. Lower voltage requirement further makes it possible to weld on thinner materials. Lower oxygen content in the weld deposits provide better toughness and easier welding in all-positions.

Metal-core gas metal arc welding of ferrous steels with noble gas shielding

A welding wire comprising a flux core having a core composition alloyed with a combination of alloying elements is described. The alloying elements comprise Cr and N, wherein the flux core comprises between 10% and 50% of the total weight of the weld wire. A metal sheath encapsulates the flux core, wherein the metal sheath comprises between about 90% and 50% of the total weight of the welding wire and wherein the welding wire can be used in a welding process without destabilizing a welding arc. One of the applications of the wire and welding process of the present invention is hard surfacing of the steel mill rolls, which are hollow cylinders usually on continuous casters. As an example, the rolls welded by the wire and method of the present invention can have a diameter of about 12 inches or less. Additionally, a welding apparatus comprising a welding gun with a device for feeding an electrode into the welding gun is described. The corresponding welding process calls for gas shielding of the electrode to reduce spatter and smoke emission while creating a smooth weld bead surface requiring less grinding and finishing. The resulting weld deposit has enhanced resistance to pitting corrosion.
