A heat pump system having a filter-dryer unit located in the discharge line of the compressor provides unidirectional operation of the filter dryer in a bidirectional system. The relatively high water retention capacity of molecular sieve desiccant at elevated temperatures allows operation of the filter-dryer at the outlet of the compressor while internal baffles in the unit, a specially sized housing and a spring loaded desiccant support structure accommodate the relatively high fluid velocity and other conditions encountered in the discharge line.

Discharge line filter-dryer

A coupling for unflared tubes comprising a body with a nut threadably connected thereto so as to form a chamber therebetween, a deformable gripping and sealing sleeve in the chamber and being undeformed when the nut and body are partially threaded together so that an unflared tube may be inserted into the nut, body and sleeve to a position where it may be gripped and sealed by the sleeve upon deformation of the latter by further threading of the nut upon the body. The nut has mounted therein a ring of flexible spring metal slotted so as to form fingers whose radially inner ends are initially on a diameter smaller than the outside diameter of the tube and bendable by insertion of the tube therethrough while the sleeve is undeformed so as to grip the tube by spring action to prevent withdrawal of the tube, as by gravity, and thus to hold the same in its proper position for being gripped by the deformable sleeve upon final tightening of the nut upon the body.

Tube coupling

A valve for regulating flow of fluid in a refrigerating system. The valve includes a valve chamber with an inlet, an outlet and a sensing bore communicating therewith and there is a valve element in the chamber for controlling flow of fluid from the inlet passage past a valve seat to the outlet passage. The valve element is urged by a spring pressed plunger toward an open position and is pressed by a thermostatically actuated piston extending through the sensing bore toward a closed position in opposition to the spring pressure. The sensing bore has a smaller diameter than the valve seat and the valve element is so supported between the piston and the spring pressed plunger whereby there is an effective area on the valve element determined by the difference in areas between the valve seat and sensing bore and which effective area responds to increasing and decreasing fluid pressure within the inlet port to correspondingly decrease and increase the valve opening and thereby maintain substantially constant flow through the valve despite such increasing and decreasing pressures.

Control valve

A valve assembly particularly adapted for air conditioning systems and with provision for mounting on a panel or housing wall. The valve assembly has an elongated body with three bosses extending radially therefrom. The body has abutment faces at two of the bosses and has an abutment shoulder at the third boss, which is between the other two bosses. The abutment faces lie in a common plane and are adapted to contact one side of a panel or housing wall that has openings through which the three bosses may project. A jam nut is threaded onto the middle boss for contacting the other side of the panel or housing wall for clamping the same against the abutment faces. The abutment shoulder is inwardly offset a slight distance from the abutment faces to assure that the panel or housing wall will contact the abutment faces when the jam nut is tightened but it will serve as a stop to prevent undue bending of the panel or housing wall under pressure of the jam nut.

Valve assembly for panel mounting

A refrigerant fluid charging device that comprises an expansion valve, a charging tube for connecting the outlet of the expansion valve to the system to be charged, a thermally conductive tube enveloping the charging tube, and a thermal sensing tube connected to the expansion valve, the sensing tube being in temperature sensing contact with the conductive tube at spaced locations and at one of such locations being adapted to be brought into temperature sensing contact with the suction line of the system to be charged. The method includes the steps of providing a charging device in accordance with the foregoing, connecting the inlet of the expansion valve with a source of refrigerant fluid, connecting the charging tube to the suction line of the system to be charged, bringing the thermal sensing tube at one location thereof into temperature sensing contact with the system suction line, and initiating flow of refrigerant fluid from the source of supply through the expansion valve and charging line to the system suction line, and permitting flow of fluid into the system until the expansion valve is automatically closed under the influence of the sensing tube.
