Methods for making comprising hollow silica particles from a composition comprising a silicon-containing compound selected from the group consisting of tetraalkoxysilanes, trialkyloxysilanes and derivatives thereof, dialkoxysilanes and derivatives thereof, alkoxysilanes and derivatives thereof, silicone oligomers, oligomeric silsesquioxanes and silicone polymers distributed over a polymer template core that is eliminated from the particle in a two-stage heating process. The particles of the present invention have a substantially uniform particle size and exhibit low permeability to liquids.

Methods for making and compositions comprising hollow silica particle are disclosed, said particles made from a composition comprising a silicon-containing compound selected from the group consisting of tetraalkoxysilanes, trialkyloxysilanes and derivatives thereof, dialkoxysilanes and derivatives thereof, alkoxysilanes and derivatives thereof, silicone oligomers, oligomeric silsesquioxanes and silicone polymers distributed over a polymer template core that is eliminated from the particle. The particles of the present invention have a substantially uniform particle size and exhibit low permeability to liquids.

Hollow silica particles, compositions comprising them, and methods for making same

Some embodiments of the present invention are directed toward nanocrystalline oxide-based phosphor materials, and methods for making same. Typically, such methods comprise a steric entrapment route for converting precursors into such phosphor material. In some embodiments, the nanocrystalline oxide-based phosphor materials are quantum splitting phosphors. In some or other embodiments, such nanocrystalline oxide based phosphor materials provide reduced scattering, leading to greater efficiency, when used in lighting applications.

Method to produce nanocrystalline powders of oxide-based phosphors for lighting applications

A Raman-active particle as well as a method of making a Raman-active particle are described. The Raman-active particle includes a core particle and a coating. The coating substantially covers the core particle. A Raman-active analyte is at least partially within the coating. The method of making a Raman-active particle includes i) providing a colloidal solution comprising a core particle; ii) providing a coating or coating precursor to the colloidal solution to form a resulting solution; and iii) providing a Raman-active analyte to the resulting solution. A method of conducting an assay is also described. The method includes: i) attaching a Raman-active particle to a targeted moiety; ii) measuring the Raman spectrum of the Raman-active particle; and iii) correlating the Raman spectrum to the presence of the targeted moiety.

Raman-active particles and methods of making and using them

The present invention provides a process for producing particles, such as oxide nanoparticles, in a substantially water-free environment. The process involves mixing at least one metal compound of the formula MXwith at least one surfactant and at least one solvent, wherein M is an electropositive element of Groups 1&#x2013;15; each X is independently selected from the group consisting of O, F, Cl, Br, I, OR, OCR, NR, and R; each R is independently a hydrocarbyl group; n is equal to &#xbd; the oxidation state of the metal M in the product particle; and m is equal to the oxidation state of the element M. The components are typically combined to form a mixture which is thermally treated for a time period sufficient to convert the metal compound into particles of the corresponding oxide, having sizes in a range between about 0.5 nanometer and about 1000 nanometers. Examples of metal compounds employed in this process include materials such as Si(OR), Ti(OR)(where R is as described above), (Zr(OiPr))(OAc), and the like. Illustrative oxide materials which can be prepared by this process include TiO, ZrO, SiO, and BO.

Method of making oxide particles

A light source comprises: (a) a source of plasma discharge that emits electromagnetic radiation, a portion of which has wavelengths shorter than about 200 nm; and (b) a phosphor composition that comprises particles, each of the particles comprising at least a first phosphor and at least a second phosphor, the phosphor composition is disposed such that the first phosphor absorbs substantially the portion of EM radiation having wavelengths shorter than about 200 nm, and the first phosphor emits EM radiation having wavelengths longer than about 200 nm.

Light sources with nanometer-sized VUV radiation-absorbing phosphors

A method for preparing an organosilicon composition from an olefin and a silicon hydride with a hydrosilation catalyst PtL X , in an amount less than 1 ppm based on the weight of the product composition, is disclosed. The method is particularly useful in lowering the cost, coloration, and stability of the product, particularly when an oxirane-containing olefin is used in the hydrosilation. In this method no inhibitor is needed to prevent the undesired polymerization of oxiranes in the reaction, and no purification of the product is required after removal of volatile components, including solvent.
