A shock absorber assembly includes a coil spring that reacts between first and second spring seats. The first spring seat is fixed to a shock cylinder and the second spring seat is fixed to a rod that is slidably received within the shock cylinder. An isolator is positioned between an end coil of the spring and at least one of the first and second spring seats. The isolator comprises an annular ring that defines a cavity that is at least partially filled with fluid. The isolator evenly distributes non-centered spring end forces through the fluid to reduce the effects of side load forces.

A shock absorber for a vehicle suspension includes a pneumatic actuator that is fluidly connected to a compressed air source in the vehicle suspension, such as a suspension air bag. The pneumatic actuator cooperates with an adjustment mechanism housed within the shock absorber to adjust damping. The shock absorber includes a main rod that supports a piston for axial movement within a cylinder body. The piston separates the cylinder body into first and second fluid chambers. The adjustment mechanism includes an adjustment rod that is received within an axial bore formed within the main rod. The adjustment rod is axially moved within the axial bore by the pneumatic actuator to uncover and cover a plurality of bores that are in fluid communication with at least one of the first and second fluid chambers. The pneumatic actuator includes a plunger having a tapered surface that engages the adjuster rod to move the adjuster rod in a desired direction to adjust damping. A fitting and a restrictor plug cooperate to fluidly connect the pneumatic actuator to the compressed air source and to meter air flow to attenuate pressure spikes.

An air spring suspension damper assembly includes a first housing and a second housing which telescope relative to each other. An actuating member such as a cable is connected to a height leveling valve contained in one of the housings and attached to the other housing. The actuating member moves a member such as a rotating cam, a rotating valve plate and/or a rotating valve such that changes in the suspension height rotate the member. Rotation of the member selectively opens inlet and exhaust flow paths to control the air pressure in the damper assembly and maintain air suspension height at a predetermined height.

An adjustable shock absorber is provided that includes a body having a fluid passageway with first and second passages in fluid communication with one another. A valve assembly is arranged between the passages and includes a plunger that is adjustable between a plurality of positions corresponding to a plurality of fluid flow positions. The valve assembly includes a metering valve having a orifice in a disc, and the plunger includes a needle with a portion disposed in said orifice to provide flow area. The flow area is changed when the plunger moves. The valve assembly also includes a blow-off valve in which the disc is biased to a closed position by a spring arranged between the plunger and the disc. Movement of the plunger changes the loading on the spring. An adjustment knob has a cammed surface that cooperates with the plunger so that as the adjustment knob is rotated the cammed surface moves the plunger. In this manner, the blow-off and metering valves may be adjusted simultaneously, or independently if the metering and blow-off valves are separated, to provide more desirable shock absorber adjustment. Moreover, adjustment of the shock absorber is not necessarily limited to a finite number of distinct positions.

Shock absorber compression damping adjustment

A shock absorber assembly includes a damping adjustment mechanism that can easily be incorporated into a twin cylinder design. The shock absorber includes an outer cylinder and an inner cylinder mounted within the outer cylinder. The inner cylinder is spaced apart from the outer cylinder to define a gap. A piston is mounted within a fluid filled chamber formed within the inner cylinder to dampen vibrations. Holes are drilled into the wall of the inner cylinder to provide fluid ports that can communicate with the gap to form a bi-directional fluid path as the piston moves back and forth within the chamber to dampen vibrations. To provide variable damping, the outer cylinder includes an eccentric inner diameter to outer diameter profile that allows damping adjustment between high and low damping forces. The damping force is adjusted by rotating the outer cylinder relative to the inner cylinder to vary the size of the gap with respect to the ports.
