The present invention provides polymers of ethylene having ethyl branches, a narrow molecular weight distribution, no substantial amount of branches longer than any comonomer employed in the polymerization, and an unusually low branching to density ratio. In one embodiment the polyethylenes are substantially free of any branches having more than 2 carbon atoms, i.e. ethyl branches, and the molar percent of ethyl branches is substantially the same for molecular fractions across the molecular weight distribution. In another embodiment the polyethylenes have other branches having 3 or more carbons and the molar percent of the ethyl branches is substantially the same for molecular fractions across the molecular weight distribution.

A method is provided for forming a supported cyclopentadiene-type compound comprising contacting a cyclopentadiene-type compound containing an active halogen with an inorganic support having surface hydroxyl group. Also there is provided a method of preparing a supported metallocene comprising reacting the supported cyclopentadiene-type compound with a transition metal compound under suitable conditions. There is also provided a process for producing bridged cyclopentadiene-type ligands having a bridge having branch that has a terminal vinyl group. Also metallocenes of these ligands are provided. Still further there is provided a process for producing bridged cyclopentadiene-type ligands having a bridge having a branch that has a terminal active halogen. The resulting new ligands and supported metallocenes produced therefrom are also provided. There is further provided supported metallocene catalysts wherein at least two metallocenes of differing effectiveness are both bonded to an inorganic support having surface hydroxy groups. Olefin polymerization employing the inventive bridged supported metallocenes is also provided, as well the resulting polymer products.

Methods are disclosed for preparing a highly active solid metallocene-containing catalyst system and its use in the polymerization of olefins. The catalyst system is prepared by creating a catalyst system solution by combining an aluminoxane with a metallocene having a substituent which has olefinic unsaturation in a suitable liquid to form a liquid catalyst system, conducting prepolymerization of an olefin in the liquid catalyst system, and separating the resulting solid metallocene-containing catalyst system from the reaction mixture. Also polymerization of olefins using the inventive solid catalyst system is disclosed.

Method for making and using a supported metallocene catalyst system

A process is provided for producing a poly(arylene sulfide) polymer which employs at least one base as a reactant, wherein the base is contacted with the polymerization reaction mixture incrementally during the polymerization.

Also provided are a composition comprising the sulfur-containing derivative, a process for preparing the derivative, a composition comprising a polymer chemically bonded to the derivative, and a process for preparing the composition which comprises a polymer chemically bonded to the derivative.

A composition comprising a stabilizer chemically bonded to a polymer matrix, and which reduces the deleterious effect of UV light absorption by the polymer is provided. The stabilizer comprises a sulfur-containing derivative of hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole having the formula of: ##STR1## wherein each X is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogens, cyano, alkyl, phenyl group, biphenyl group, arylthio, amine, ketone, aldehyde, alkoxy, hydroxy, carboxylic acid group, oligomer and combinations thereof and can have carbon atoms up to about 20; n is a whole number from 1 to 5; n' is a whole number from 0 to 4; n' is a wbole number from 1 to 2 and each n' can be the same or different; Y is selected from the group consisting of --S(O)(O)--, --S(O)--, and --S--; each R can be selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl group, alkenyl group, aralkyl group, alkaryl group, and combinations thereof and can have 0 to about 10 carbon atoms; each OH group can be at either the 2'- or the 6'-position, or both.

A random copolymer composed of at least one arylene sulfide segment and at least one arylene aulfide sulfone segment is prepared by contacting at least one dihaloaromatic sulfide having a formula of X--Ar(R).sub.n --S--Ar.sup.1 (R.sup.1).sub.n --X.sup.1, with a mixture comprising at least one sulfur source and at least one dihaloaromatic sulfone having a formula of X.sup.2 --Ar.sup.2 (R.sup.2).sub.n --S(O.sub.2)--Ar.sup.3 (R.sup.3).sub.n --X.sup.3 in the presence of a polar organic compound under polymerization conditions to synthesize a random copolymer; where X, X.sup.1, X.sup.2, and X.sup.3 can be the same or different halogens and are each selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine; Ar, Ar.sup.1, Ar.sup.2, and Ar.sup.3 are each an arylene group; R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and hydrocarbyl radical in which the hydrocarbyl radical can be alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, and aryl radicals; and n is a whole number from 0 to 4. The total number of carbon atoms in each molecule represented by X--Ar(R).sub.n --S--Ar.sup.1 (R.sup.1).sub.n --X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 --Ar.sup.2 (R.sup.2).sub.n --S(O.sub.2)--Ar.sup.3 (R.sup.3)--X.sup.3 is in the range of from about 12 to about 54.

Random copolymers of poly(arylene sulfide)s and process therefor

A process for purifying a halogenated aromatic sulfone or ketone compound comprises contacting the compound with a mixture containing a solvent having a normal boiling point less than about 225.degree. C. and water to form a second mixture, heating the second mixture at a temperature sufficient to substantially dissolve the halogenated compound to form a third mixture, cooling the third mixture to purify and recrystallize the compound, and recovering the purified, recrystallized compound. A second embodiment of the invention comprises repeating the purification process steps at least once to further purify the halogenated aromatic sulfone or ketone compound.

Purification of halogenated aromatic sulfones or ketones

A process for preparing a poly(arylene sulfide) and copolymer thereof from a poly(arylene sulfide disulfide) is provided which comprises contacting the poly(arylene sulfide disulfide) with a polyhalo-substituted cyclic compound having unsaturation between adjacent ring carbon atoms and having halogen atoms attached to the ring carbon atoms in a polar organic compound and a basic compound at an elevated temperature. Alternatively, the poly(arylene sulfide disulfide) can be substantially dissolved in the polar organic solvent at elevated temperature to form fragments which can be contacted with the polyhalo-substituted cyclic compound in a polar organic compound and a basic compound at an elevated temperature. The fragments also can be isolated, recovered and then contacted with the polyhalo-substituted cyclic compound in a polar organic compound and a basic compound at an elevated temperature.

Preparation of poly(arylene sulfide)s from poly(arylene sulfide

A process for preparing a pillared interlayered clay comprises heating a smectite clay containing material with a solution comprising a polymeric cationic hydroxy metal complex of a suitable metal (preferably aluminum) and a surfactant having the formula of R.sup.1 --O--(CHR.sup.2 --CHR.sup.2 O).sub.x H, wherein, R.sup.1 is an aliphatic C.sub.6 H.sub.13 --C.sub.24 H.sub.49 hydrocarbyl radical, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or the methyl group, and x is about 3-7. The thus prepared pillared interlayered clay exhibits high surface area, high methane storage capacity and high resolution in separating gaseous hydrocarbons.
