The disclosure is directed to benchmarking a server computer ('server'), e.g., a storage system of the server. The process can benchmark a candidate server using data from a production server that is handling live traffic of an application, e.g., a social networking application. The process includes collecting, from the production server, production data that is indicative of a workload of the production server, and generating a benchmark program using the production data. Upon execution of the benchmark program, the candidate server is made to process a workload generated based on the production data. The benchmark program records the performance of the candidate server, which is indicative of a performance of the candidate server in processing a workload similar to the production data. The performance results can be used in determining whether to upgrade the configuration of the production server to that of the candidate server, e.g., to improve performance.

Benchmarking servers based on production data

Embodiments are disclosed for analyzing data storage devices. The present disclosure employs a 'canary' test that selects multiple storage devices and tests the same for a predetermined period of time. By analyzing the statuses of the storage devices monitored and recorded during the applicable tests, the present disclosure can generate an analytical result regarding the characteristics of the storage devices. The analytical result can be presented to an operator in a meaningful way so as to enable him or her to make an informed decision when utilizing a storage device with characteristics similar to the tested storage devices.

A computer-implemented method for computing an optimal plan for maximizing availability of the workload balancing of a virtual computing device, in the event of maintenance of the virtual computing device, is provided. The computer-implemented method comprises determining a workload placement plan that migrates a plurality of virtual machines of the virtual computing device to at least one location of a plurality of hypervisors. The computer-implemented method further comprises receiving input parameters for computing the workload placement plan for migrating the plurality of virtual machines. The computer-implemented method further comprises determining the workload placement plan that forms the basis for migrating the plurality of virtual machines, within the virtual computing device, for maximizing operating objectives of the virtual computing device.

Workload-aware load balancing to minimize scheduled downtime during maintenance of host or hypervisor of a virtualized computing system

A method, system and computer program product for optimizing storage system behavior in a cloud computing environment. An Input/Output (I/O) operation data is appended with a tag, where the tag indicates a class of data for the I/O operation data. Upon the storage controller reviewing the tag appended to the I/O operation data, the storage controller performs a table look-up for the storage policy associated with the determined class of data. The storage controller applies a map to determine a storage location for the I/O operation data in a drive device, where the map represents a logical volume which indicates a range of block data that is to be excluded for being stored on the drive device and a range of block data that is to be considered for being stored on the drive device. In this manner, granularity of storage policies is provided in a cloud computing environment.

Optimizing storage system behavior in virtualized cloud computing environments by tagging input/output operation data to indicate storage policy

A system, computer program product and method for servicing requests. A server may be configured to receive a stream of requests to access particular logical block addresses in one or more logical drives in a RAID from one or more clients. The server may be coupled to one or more RAID adapters that are coupled to the RAID. The server may comprise a software RAID and each RAID adapter may comprise a hardware RAID. By monitoring the utilization of the processors in the server and in each RAID adapter, all or part of these received requests may subsequently be routed to either the software RAID or the hardware RAID based on which implementation is more desirable to service these requests.
