This invention relates generally to uses of novel nanomaterial composition and the systems in which they are used, and more particularly to nanomaterial compositions generally comprising carbon and a metal, which composition can be exposed to pulsed emissions to react, activate, combine, or sinter the nanomaterial composition. The nanomaterial compositions can alternatively be utilized at ambient temperature or under other means to cause such reaction, activation, combination, or sintering to occur.

A tubing conveyed casing collar locator system that detects the casing collars in a wellbore and acoustically transmits the information through the tubing to the surface where it is detected and processed in a surface processor. The system comprises a downhole tool which comprises downhole sensors, a signal processor with memory, a drive circuit, a battery pack, and a signal generator. The surface system comprises a surface processor, depth system, and acoustic signal transmitter/receiver. The downhole tool detects casing collars as the tool is moved through the collar and acoustically transmits the data or stores the data in downhole memory according to programmed instructions. In one embodiment, the tool compares sensor signals from production elements, such as valves, to stored sensor signatures to uniquely identify the downhole element. In one embodiment, the downhole tool changes operating modes in response to surface command.

System and methods for detecting casing collars

An Internal Bottom Hole Assembly (IBHA) for a Coiled Tubing (CT) enables the CT to be used with other devices downhole. The IBHA includes a connector, a valve assembly and an emergency disconnect device, all of which are mounted internally in the CT. The connector couples to the inside of the CT by means of wedges that are urged against the inside wall of the CT. The valve assembly may be mounted either between the connector and the disconnect device or may be on the side of the connector away from the disconnect device. The valve assembly includes one or more flapper valves that are able to pass a ball through at a minimum flow rate of fluid, enabling the ball to be used to operate the disconnect device.

A compensating system for an inflatable element is disclosed which can be responsive to a temperature increase or decrease and still regulate the inflate pressure of the inflatable element, despite fluctuations in pressures above or below the element. A compensating piston with an atmospheric chamber is used. The compensating piston is coupled to a balancing piston. The balancing piston is ported to receive pressure from above the element on one side, and below the element on the other side. When the apparatus is run in the hole, wellbore pressure causes the compensating piston to be in the collapsed position. Upon inflation, the compensating piston strokes. A positioning mechanism positions the compensating piston in the center to allow it to handle both temperature increases and decreases. Upon complete inflation of the element, the positioning mechanism releases the balancing piston to let it float and porting is opened from above and below the inflated element to the balancing piston. The balancing piston applies an opposite load on the compensating piston to counteract either a change in inject pressure from above or formation pressure from below.

Junctions in multilateral well structures are sealed by employing a variety of degrees of premachined components and a variety of sealing embodiments, including casing segments having premachined windows, side pocket members which are adapted to reside within the string during run in and move laterally to the deployed position, woven members, cement filled ECPs, etc. Also disclosed is a downhole milling device which cuts a window in a casing segment or other material based upon a predetermined geometric pattern imposed upon the cutting tool by an integral template.
