A method of providing an underbalance in a wellbore that includes positioning a surge assembly within the wellbore; bypassing a differential chamber that extends along a portion of the length of the surge assembly when flowing fluid through a fluid passageway that extends along the length of the surge assembly; and placing the fluid passageway in fluid communication with the air chamber to create an underbalance in the fluid passageway.

A method comprises providing a gun string assembly within a wellbore and perforating the wellbore using the gun string assembly. The gun string assembly comprises a plurality of perforating guns coupled in series. A first perforating gun of the plurality of perforating guns comprises a first portion of shaped charges, and a second perforating gun of the plurality of perforating guns comprises a second portion of shaped charges operably associated with a secondary pressure generator. The first perforating gun and the second perforating gun are configured in the gun string assembly to provide a pressure transient comprising one or more pressures at a location in the wellbore that meet one or more thresholds.

Perforating gun assembly and method for controlling wellbore pressure regimes during perforating

A method comprises: a. determining a configuration of a gun string, b. determining, by a computer, a pressure transient at a location in a wellbore, c. comparing the one or more pressures with the one or more pressure thresholds at the location, and d. perforating the wellbore with the gun string using the determined configuration of the gun string when the one or more pressures meet the one or more pressure thresholds at the location. The location in the wellbore has one or more pressure thresholds, and the pressure transient comprises one or more pressures.

A downhole tool gun string assembly comprises a first perforating gun operable to generate a first pressure at a first location in a wellbore, wherein the first perforating gun comprises a first plurality of perforating charges; a second perforating gun operable to generate a second pressure at a second location in the wellbore, wherein the second pressure is different from the first pressure and the second perforating gun comprises a second plurality of perforating charges, and wherein at least one of the second plurality of perforating charges is operably associated with a secondary pressure generator, where the first perforating gun and the second perforating gun are configured to maintain a pressure at a selected location in the wellbore below a threshold when the first and second perforating guns are activated substantially concurrently.

A perforating gun assembly for use in a wellbore. The perforating gun assembly includes a carrier gun body and a charge holder disposed within the carrier gun body. A plurality of shaped charges are supported within the carrier gun body. A secondary pressure generator is operably associated with at least one of the shaped charges. The secondary pressure generator optimizes the wellbore pressure regime immediately after detonation of the shaped charges by controlling the dynamic underbalance created by the empty gun chambers to prevent excessive dynamic underbalance which may detrimentally effect the perforating operation.

Magnetorheological fluids, which solidify in response to a magnetic field, offer the ability to simplify many of the valves and control systems used downhole in the search for and production of oil and gas. They lessen the need for moving parts, provide solid-state valves, and can provide a differential movement of fluid through the valves by varying the strength of the magnetic field. Combinations of permanent and electro-magnets can improve safety by providing valves that fail, when power is lost, in either an open or closed position, depending on design. A number of examples are given.

Valve and position control using magnetorheological fluids

A perforating gun assembly useful in hydrocarbon well completion. The gun is assembled in a carrier made from straight walled tubing as a primary structural member with complementary male and female threads cut into opposite ends so that gun assemblies may be directly connected together. The male coupling includes a reinforcing sleeve threaded into an internal thread. An alignment pin is positioned in the carrier extending through the reinforcing ring and into the interior of the carrier. A charge assembly includes a charge holder tube with upper and lower alignment fixtures. The lower alignment fixture includes an alignment slot for mating with the alignment pin and a shoulder for supporting the charge assembly on the sleeve. The upper alignment fixture has an alignment pin for mating with an alignment slot in the carrier. A retainer ring may be threaded into the upper female threads to prevent removal of the charge assembly from the carrier.

Perforating gun

A latching system permits a firing head to be lowered into a wellbore and reliably coupled to a perforating gun previously lowered into the wellbore. In a disclosed embodiment thereof, the latching system includes a tubular collar associated with the firing head, and a stinger associated with the perforating gun. As the firing head approaches the previously lowered perforating gun, shearable studs projecting into the interior of the collar are received in external side surface J-slots formed on the stinger. The latching of the collar studs in the stinger J-slots permits the firing head/perforating gun connection to be verified simply by pulling up on and creating increased tension in the structure, such as a slick line, used to lower the firing head to the perforating gun. After the firing head is used to detonate the perforating gun, the spent firing head may be retrieved by pulling it uphole with sufficient force to shear its collar studs. Cooperating auxiliary attachment structures are formed on the firing head and perforating gun to facilitate their interconnection and simultaneous lowering into the wellbore if desired.
