A curable primer composition comprising:(a) a curable component such as methacrylate; (b) a cure initiating component; and (c) a polymer material selected from the group consisting of: (i) block polymers represented by S-A-S where S is polystyrene and A stands for a polymer or copolymer formed from one or more of ethylene, propylene, butylene, and styrene, which are optionally substituted with carboxylic acid or maleic anhydride; provided that when A comprises styrene then A is a copolymer of styrene with at least one of ethylene, propylene and butylene, and is optionally substituted with carboxylic acid or maleic anhydride; and (ii) polystyrene-poly(ethylene-propylene) ('SEP'); and (iii) any combination of said polymer materials. The composition is applied to a part then photocured. It is dry to touch. Thereafter a thermoplastic material such as a polyolefin is overmolded (e.g. injection molded) over the applied composition. It enhances bond strength of the polyolefin to the part.

The present invention relates to adhesives that are suitable for use in a broad variety of bonding applications. In particular, the present invention relates to adhesives that are suitable for use in polymer-to-metal, for example elastomer-to-metal, such as rubber-to-metal bonding applications, wherein the adhesives comprise at least one halogenated polyolefin, at least one epoxysilane having at least one terminal alkoxy silane group, at least one bis-silane, and optionally at lease one organic solvent.

Adhesives suitable for use in bonding applications

Methods for bonding polymeric substrates to hydroxylated surfaces such as glass are disclosed. The polymeric substrates may be elastomeric substrates such as a natural or synthetic rubber. The method may comprise applying a compound comprising at least one alkoxy silane moiety and at least one moiety selected from a nitrosoaromatic or a nitrosoaromatic precursor to one of the substrates. The nitrosoaromatic moiety may be a nitrosobenzene. The nitrosoaromatic precursor may be a nitrosobenzene precursor, such as at least one of a quinone dioxime or a quinone oxime. Novel primers and compounds suitable for use in the bonding process are also disclosed.

Compositions comprising at least one copper salt, and an aromatic nitroso compound precursor are provided. The copper salt may oxidize the aromatic nitroso compound precursor to provide an aromatic nitroso compound. The compositions may find utility in polymer to metal, in particular, rubber to metal bonding. The aromatic nitroso compound precursor may be a nitrosobenzene/dinitrosobenzene precursor. The nitrosobenzene or dinitrosobenzene precursor may be at least one of a quinone oxime or a quinone dioxime.

Oxidising agents for elastomer bonding compositions

Compositions having a compound comprising at least one alkoxy silane moiety, and at least one moiety selected from a nitrosoaromatic or a nitrosoaromatic precursor and combinations thereof; and an aqueous or water containing carrier medium are provided for use in polymer bonding. The water may allow for substantial hydrolysis of the compound. Suitable polymers may have diene or allylic functionality within the polymer chain, for example an elastomer such as a natural or synthetic rubber. The polymers may be bonded to metals or substrates with hydroxylated surfaces such as glass. The nitrosobenzene precursor may be at least one of a quinone dioxime or a quinone oxime.

Compositions for polymer bonding

The present invention provides for compounds comprising at least one phosphonate or phosphinate moiety; and at least one moiety selected from an aromatic nitroso or an aromatic nitroso precursor and combinations thereof. Adhesive compositions comprising the compounds may find utility in bonding polymers to metal and or hydroxylated surfaces such as glass. Suitable polymers include natural and synthetic rubbers. The aromatic nitroso precursor may be a nitrosobenzene precursor such as at least one of a quinone dioxime or a quinone oxime.

Phosphonate bonding compositions

Compositions comprising at least one oxidant or adhesion promoter, and at least one molecule selected from an aromatic nitroso compound or an aromatic nitroso compound precursor dinitrosobenzene precursor and combinations thereof are provided. At least one of the components is encapsulated. The compositions may find utility in polymer to metal, in particular, rubber to metal bonding. The aromatic nitroso compound or an aromatic nitroso compound precursor may be nitrosobenzene/dinitrosobenzene or nitrosobenzene/dinitrosobenzene precursor respectfully. The nitrosobenzene or dinitrosobenzene precursor may be at least one of a quinone oxime or a quinone dioxime.

Elastomer to substrate bonding

A compound comprising at least one alkoxy silane moiety; and at least one moiety selected from a nitrosobenzene or a nitrosobenzene precursor and combinations thereof are provided and used in polymer to metal in particular rubber to metal bonding. The nitrosobenzene precursor may be at least one of a quinone dioxime or a quinone oxime.
