A method for drilling a subterranean wellbore includes rotating a drill string in the wellbore to drill. The drill string includes a roll-stabilized housing deployed in a drill collar and survey sensors deployed in the roll-stabilized housing. Sensor measurements are acquired while the drill string is rotating. High bandwidth accelerometer measurements may be obtained by combining triaxial accelerometer measurements and gyroscopic sensor measurements. Survey parameters, including a wellbore azimuth, may be computed from the high bandwidth accelerometer measurements. Triaxial magnetometer measurements may be processed to compute an eddy current induced wellbore azimuth error which may be removed from a previously computed wellbore azimuth to obtain a corrected wellbore azimuth.

A method for evaluating a planned well trajectory for avoidance of collision with an existing wellbore includes constructing a bounding box about the planned well trajectory and a bounding box for a trajectory of at least one existing wellbore. If there is no intersection between the bounding boxes, the planned well trajectory is used for drilling a well.

A novel method is presented to automatically design a multi-well development plan given a set of previously interpreted subsurface targets. This method identifies the optimal plan by minimizing the total cost as a function of existing and required new platforms, the number of wells, and the drilling cost of each of the wells. The cost of each well is a function of the well path and the overall complexity of the well.

Geometrical optimization of multi-well trajectories

A method is disclosed which utilizes multiple overlapping surveys to estimate a position in a wellbore and related position uncertainty. Multiple surveys are often taken over the same portion of a wellbore either concurrently or sequentially and/or using various instruments. Each survey generates an estimated survey position and related uncertainty for a given location in the wellbore. By combining the estimated survey positions and uncertainties for these overlapping surveys, a resultant position and related ellipsoid of uncertainty is estimated. This resultant position estimates a position in the wellbore by incorporating the estimated survey positions and uncertainties of multiple overlapping surveys.
