Techniques are described for providing location-based information and functionality to people and computing devices in various ways. In at least some situations, the techniques include enabling multiple people in a common geographic area to interact in various ways, such as via devices capable of communications (e.g., cellular telephones, computing devices with wired and/or wireless communications capabilities, etc.). In addition, the techniques include enabling the creation and maintenance of location-based virtual groups of users (also referred to as 'clouds'), such as for users of mobile and/or fixed-location devices. Such clouds may enable various types of interactions between group members, and may be temporary and/or mobile.

According to one example, a system comprises a plurality of cooking device systems that are each operable to be used in cooking a food item during a cooking process; a heat source system comprising a plurality of heat sources that are each operable to provide an amount of energy to be used to cook the food item; and a sensor operable to detect information associated with the cooking process. The system further comprises a processor operable to determine an identity of a first cooking device system and determine an identity of a first heat source. The processor is further operable to receive an indication of the detected information; determine whether there is an error in the cooking process based on the indication; and following a determination that there is an error in the cooking process, transmit an indication of the error in the cooking process.

Techniques are described for determining locations of interest based on user visits. In some situations, the techniques include obtaining information about actual locations of users at various times, and automatically analyzing the information to determine particular locations in a geographic area that are of interest, such as for frequent destinations visited by users. After determining a particular location of interest, it may be represented by generating a corresponding location model to describe the geographic subarea or other location point(s) covered by the determined location of interest, and one or more points of interest (e.g., businesses, parks, schools, landmarks, etc.) may be identified that are located at or otherwise correspond to the determined location of interest. In addition, a determined location of interest may be further used in various ways, including to identify later user visits to that location (e.g., to a point of interest identified for the location).

According to one example, a cookware apparatus includes a vessel. The vessel includes a bottom, and a sidewall surrounding the bottom and extending upward from the bottom so as to form a fluid retaining interior region. The sidewall terminates at a rim. The vessel also includes a channel extending through a portion of the bottom and further extending upward into and through a portion of the sidewall. The channel has an opening positioned in an external surface of the sidewall. The cookware apparatus further includes a thermal sensor positioned within the channel. The thermal sensor extends through the portion of the bottom and further extends upward into and through the portion of the sidewall.

According to one example, a system includes a heat source operable to provide an amount of energy to be used to cook a food item, and further includes one or more processors. The processors are operable to receive an indication of a requested cooking temperature, and to receive a plurality of indications of measured temperature associated with the food item at different times. The processors are further operable to determine an integral term based on differences between the requested cooking temperature and the measured temperatures, to determine a heat loss term based on the integral term, and to determine an energy adjustment based on the heat loss term. The heat source is further operable to modify the amount of energy provided by the heat source in accordance with the determined energy adjustment.

Techniques are described related to selecting content items, such as by enabling user analysis and control of product-related content items selected for display to users. The content items may include advertisements or other promotional materials, and the selecting of the content items may be performed as part of determining particular promotional materials to display or otherwise present to particular users in particular situations. User analysis and control of selected content items that are displayed on a target electronic site may be enabled by providing, as part of the target electronic site, additional selection-related functionality whose availability is restricted to one or more authorized users&#x2014;for example, such additional restricted access information and user-selectable controls may be provided on a version of a Web page of an online retailer to enable the retailer to analyze and influence future content items selected for display on the online retailer's Web page(s).

According to one example, a system includes a computing device having a processor that is operable to display a first portion of a cooking recipe. The system further includes a heat source system having a heat source operable to provide an amount of energy to be used to cook a food item in accordance with the cooking recipe, and a processor operable to adjust the amount of energy provided by the heat source based on one or more communications with the computing device. The system further includes an auxiliary button system having an interface operable to receive an instruction to move from a first step of the cooking recipe to a second step, and a processor operable to transmit, via a second communication link with the computing device, an indication of the instruction.

A method and system for providing a pay-for-visit billing model for advertisements is provided. The advertisement system provides advertisements that have associated physical visit locations. The advertisement system provides advertisements to a mobile device or fixed of a user when the user is in the vicinity of or examining locations in the vicinity of the visit location. If the user subsequently visits the visit location of the advertisement by physically going to the location, the advertisement system then bills the advertiser for the advertisement. The advertisement system bills the advertiser under the assumption that but for the advertisement, the user would not have visited the visit location.

Techniques are described for automated control of portions of a cooking process, such as to control activation and heating for a cooking location having a piece of cooking equipment. Such automated control may include executing an automated control recipe having defined instructions used to automatically control at least some aspects (e.g., surface temperature) of the cooking equipment piece (e.g., a pan on a stove cooking surface) as part of a cooking episode to prepare one or more dishes, and may further include coordinating actions of a human user who is participating in the cooking episode by providing instructions or other information to the user. Related food preparation systems and cookware devices and components are also provided in connection with which the described automated cooking control techniques and methods may be used.
