Aspects of the present disclosure involve systems and methods for summarizing large amounts of data over time into one or more data layers. The systems and methods provide for storing data from a large data feed, which may include machine-sourced and human-sourced information, into one or more layers that are defined by layer parameters. A user of an interface may provide various parameters that define the portion or portions of the raw data feed to be included in the layer. With the received parameters, the system may analyze the raw data feed as it is received at the monitoring or collecting system to identify instances of data that match the received parameters. Through the system, data from a large raw data feed is searched and made available to a network administrator for easier management of the network without consuming vast network resources and administrator time.

Data layering in a network management system

In general, the invention is directed to techniques for establishing secure connections with devices residing behind a security device. In accordance with the techniques, a managed device initiates a transmission control protocol (TCP) session to establish a TCP session with a management device such that the management device acts as the TCP server and the managed device acts as a TCP client. Once established, the managed device sends a role reversal message specifying an identity of the managed device via the TCP session. Upon receiving the role reversal message, the management device initiates a secure connection over the TCP session in accordance with a secure protocol such that the management device acts as the secure protocol client and the managed device acts as the secure protocol server. By properly establishing the secure session, each of the devices assumes the proper roles and administrators may more easily configure the devices.

A computing device receives a setting of a customizable preference for an interface element of a user interface and receives a definition for an event associated with the setting. The computing device monitors for an occurrence of the event and receives an indication of the occurrence of the event. The computing device also obtains the setting associated with the event, applies the setting to the interface element, and renders, for presentation on a display, the interface element based on the setting.

Event-based user interface customization

A network device management application may manage a number of network devices. When managing the network devices, the management application may receive requests from administrators to modify a configuration of the network devices. In response, the management application may apply the requested modification to a model of the network device and synchronize configuration information of the model of the network device to the configuration information of the real network device using a configuration-based state machine.
