A package has at least one stack of a strip of material repeatedly folded back and forth so that the stack contains a plurality of folded overlying strip portions of the strip. Each strip portion is folded relative to one next adjacent strip portion about a first fold line transverse to the strip and relative to a second next adjacent strip portion about a second fold line transverse to the strip and spaced from the first fold line. The strip portions form a plurality of first fold lines at each end of the stack. The stack can be arranged substantially upright and has a splice tail portion of the strip extending from the bottom strip portion beyond an end of the stack to be accessible for splicing. The entire top surface and the entire bottom surface of the stack is compressed from an external force in a direction at right angles to the top surface and the bottom surface of the stack. The stack is engaged by packaging which maintains the compression.

Packaging a strip of material with compression to reduce volume

A package of strip material includes a plurality of stacks of the strip side by side where each strip forms a stacked fan folded supply of the strip which is spliced to or arranged so that it can be subsequently spliced to a next adjacent strip for supply of a continuous strip from the package. The side by side stacks are simultaneously built up from the bottom by moving a carriage back and forth below a stationary bottom surface of the stacks with the strips supplied side by side through a slot in the carriage. The stacks are supported side by side as they are built up by rigid side walls of a chute or rectangular container into which the package is to be packaged for transportation. Splice tail portions extend from the strips and are supported or arranged so that they are ready for splicing when the package is completed before transportation. Transfer of the completed stacks is effected simultaneously by a slip sheet arrangement or by moving one of the belts of the carriage as an ejection belt. A method for forming a package of a plurality of side-by-side stacks of continuous strips of material in a rectangular container is also provided. Each strip is folded back and forth about first and second fold lines to form a stack of a plurality of folded overlying strip portions which are arranged side-by-side so that the side edges are aligned. The fold lines are transverse to the strip and arranged at opposite ends of the stack. A splice tail portion extending from a first strip end portion of each stack is spliced to a second strip end portion. The stacks are compressed such that their height is equal to that of the container and the splice tail portions remain loose and uncompressed.

Packaging a strip of material

A method is provided for forming a package of a plurality of side-by-side stacks of continuous strips of material. Each strip is folded back and forth about first and second fold lines to form a stack of a plurality of folded overlying strip portions which are arranged side-by-side so that the side edges are aligned. The fold lines are transverse to the strip and arranged at opposite ends of the stack. A splice tail portion extending from a first strip end portion of each stack is spliced to a second strip end portion. The stacks are compressed such that their height is equal to that of the container and the splice tail portions remain loose and uncompressed.

Method of packaging a strip of material

An apparatus for winding tape includes a cantilevered support arm for supporting in a winding position a core onto which the tape is to be wound with a surface drive roller pivotal to a position engaging the outside of the package for causing rotation of the package in the driving position about a longitudinal axis of the arm. A lay-on roller directs the tape on to the core such that the rotation of the core acts to wind the tape into the package. The lay-on roller is driven by a lead screw in movement longitudinally of the axis to form a generally cylindrical package structure of the tape. With the lay-on roller in a retracted position to one side, the finished package on the support arm is moved by a rotatable drive head rotating about a vertical axis from the winding position away from the drive roller to a doffing position and simultaneously an empty core is moved from the doffing position over the drive roller to the winding position. The apparatus includes four winding positions at the corners of a rectangular frame so that each package at each of the positions is moved simultaneously to the doffing position outside the frame for ready access by an operator.

Transferring winding from a filled cylindrical package of an elongate material to an empty core

A method is provided for forming a package of a plurality of side-by-side stacks of continuous strips of material in a rectangular container. Each strip is folded back and forth about first and second fold lines to form a stack of a plurality of folded overlying strip portions which are arranged side-by-side so that the side edges are aligned. The fold lines are transverse to the strip and arranged at opposite ends of the stack. A splice tail portion extending from a first strip end portion of each stack is spliced to a second strip end portion. The stacks are compressed such that their height is equal to that of the container and the splice tail portions remain loose and uncompressed.

A method is provided for forming a package of a plurality of side-by-side stacks of continuous strips of material without intervening rigid container walls. Each strip is folded back and forth about first and second fold lines to form a stack of a plurality of folded overlying strip portions. The fold lines are transverse to the strip and arranged at opposite ends of the stack. The strip portions of each stack are arranged side-by-side so that the side edges are aligned. The strips are fed simultaneously through a guide slot in a movable carriage that is parallel to the stacks end upon which the stacks are arranged.

A strip is wound at a winding location onto a winding support stand carrying a rotatable elongate support core while effecting a traversing movement of the strip back and forth along the core to form a large package of the strip of diameter up to 8 feet and of length tip to 8 feet. Such a package is supported on the stand and the core during transportion from the supply location to an end use machine and during unwinding until the core is emptied of the strip. The stand with the emptied core is returned from the end use location to the supply location. The stand can be reduced in effective size while the core remains attached during return by partial collapse and/or, stacking or nesting stands together. A sling attached to the stand can be provided to support the bottom of the package to prevent sagging of material.

Method and apparatus for supplying strip material

A package of a continuous strip of material includes a plurality of parallel side by side stacks each containing a length of the strip, which is folded back and forth such that each folded portion of the stack is folded relative to the next portion about a line transverse to the strip and such that the side edges of the strip portions are aligned. The strip is continuous through each stack and can be connected by a splice from the end of one stack to beginning of the next stack. The package is compressed to reduce the height of the stacks and maintained in the compressed condition by an evacuated sealed bag. The package can have the stacks oriented vertically or horizontally. When the stacks are horizontal, the spliced portions are vertical and coplanar with the strips and at alternate ends. When the stacks are vertical, the spliced portions extend from the bottom of the stack along one end of the stack to the top of the next stack. A package can be formed with a tail at the end of each stack ready for splicing, but not yet spliced. Accumulating a twist as the stacks are unfolded is prevented either by pre-twisting the splice portions or by providing the splice portions of alternate stacks at opposed ends of the stacks. The package is formed by the method of folding the strip and securing the folded strip with packaging. The method can further include compressing the folded packaged strip, then vacuum sealing the compressed package.

Packaging a strip of material in layers with intervening splices

A package of a continuous strip of material includes a plurality of parallel side by side stacks each containing a length of the strip which is folded back and forth such that each folded portion of the stack is folded relative to the next portion about a line transverse to the strip and such that the side edges of the strip portions are aligned. The strip is continuous through each stack and is connected by a splice from the end of one stack to beginning of the next stack. The package can be compressed to reduce the height of the stacks and maintained in the compressed condition by an evacuated sealed bag. The package can be formed by folding a wide web of material back and forth and by slicing the folded web in a direction parallel to the sides of the web to form one or more stacks of a strip of width less than that of the web. The stack can be used to form the above package or can be used in a further processing by unfolding slitting and winding.

Packaging a strip of material by folding and cutting the folded package

A package of a continuous strip of material includes a plurality of parallel side by side stacks each containing a length of the strip which is folded back and forth such that each folded portion of the stack is folded relative to the next portion about a line transverse to the strip and such that the side edges of the strip portions are aligned. The strip is continuous through each stack and is connected by a splice from the end of one stack to beginning of the next stack. The package can be compressed to reduce the height of the stacks and maintained in the compressed condition by an evacuated sealed bag. The package can have the stacks vertical or horizontal. The stacks are connected by a spliced portion so that the strip is continuous through the package. When the stacks are horizontal, the spliced portions are vertical and coplanar with the strips and at alternate ends. When the stacks are vertical, the spliced portions extend from the bottom to the top at one end of the stack.

Packaging a continuous strip of material

The winding of tape into pads is effected on a machine which controls the tension in the tape as it is laid onto the pad by a lay-on roller which also drives the rotation of the pad. A pad is a spiral winding of tape in which each turn of tape is laid directly on top of the previous turns. The machine includes a series of cores one for each tape mounted on a shaft for independent rotation of each core relative to the shaft. The tape is directed from common guide rollers to a series of individual arms one for each tape with each arm being mounted on a shaft for individual adjustment along the length of the shaft to a position associated with the particular core. The shaft drives a lay-on roller at an outer end of the arm and the arm can pivot about the shaft to accommodate changes in diameter of the package as built. The use of lay-on rollers which are all driven at the same speed ensures a constant tension in the tapes even if the tapes are deviated outwardly so as to increase the spacing between the tapes relative to the original web from which the tapes are slit.
