The present invention provides particles for the presentation of haptens for the purpose of eliciting an immune response. The amino acid sequences of the monomers which make up the particles are derived from duck hepatitis B virus core protein. The particles may also deliver nucleic acids. The nucleic acids may be delivered for the purpose of enhancing an immune response, or for other purposes such as gene therapy.

Two amino acid sequences are joined together using an electron acceptor moiety and a linking moiety, such as a chelating agent. In particular, an amino acid sequence specific for binding to a material interest is linked to an enzyme which acts on an indicator, such as a colorimetric, phosphometric, fluorometric or chemiluminescent substrate. The linking composition is useful in immunoassays.

The present invention is directed toward the use of a synthetic peptide as the antigen in an immunoassay for the detection of antibodies against the equine infectious anemia virus in the serum of horses. The synthetic peptide corresponds to the amino acid sequence of an antigenic portion of the GP-45 envelope protein of the equine infectious anemia virus. The immunoassay may be a direct second antibody immunoassay, a one or two step sandwich immunoassay, or a competitive immunoassay.
