A method of generating lift for a vehicle including heating a flow of gas using a gas generator mounted on the vehicle that contributes no more than about ten percent of thrust used to propel the vehicle in a forward direction, and driving a lift fan using the heated gas flow to generate lift for the vehicle.

Method and apparatus for generating lift

A horizontal augmented thrust system includes at least one wing. The wing includes a wing outer envelope, a trailing edge and a flap. At least one pulse jet engine is positioned entirely within the wing outer envelope. The pulse jet engine produces a pulsating thrust dischargeable adjacent the trailing edge of the wing and onto the flap.

Aircraft having thrust vectoring for switchably providing upper surface blowing. The aircraft generally includes a wing and an engine. The engine can be rotatably supported to supporting structure to allow the engine to be controllably rotated relative to the wing, and/or the engine can include a thrust vectoring nozzle. The engine's thrust vectoring capabilities allow the exhaust flow to be controllably vectored to switch on or off upper surface blowing depending on the aircraft's phase of operation. During a first phase, the exhaust flow can be vectored to flow across the upper wing surface to provide upper surface blowing to augment lift. During a second phase, the exhaust flow can be discharged generally downstream or rearwardly. The engine is positioned relative to the wing such that the exhaust flow does not provide upper surface blowing during the second phase.

The vehicle includes a fuselage; a plurality of lifting surfaces attached to the fuselage having control devices attached thereto; and, an articulated propulsion system attached to the fuselage. The propulsion system includes a duct assembly pivotally connected to the fuselage. The duct assembly includes a duct and a propeller assembly mounted within the duct. A motor assembly is connected to the propeller assembly. The duct assembly may be positioned in a substantially vertical position to provide sufficient direct vertical thrust for vertical take-off and landing and may be directed in other positions to provide a varying spectrum of take-off and landing configurations, as well as a substantially horizontal position for high speed horizontal flight. Use of the control surface in the ducted propulsion assembly provides VTOL capability in a very small environment. The environment is not required to be prepared in any special manner. During horizontal flight, the wings provide the lift, which is more efficient than a propeller providing lift. The present invention takes advantage of a center line propulsion, so that there are no asymmetric propulsion loads.
