Method for applying an air suspension of minute solid particles of CIPC

A release device for slowly releasing vapors of a sprout inhibitor into a small package of potatoes is disclosed. The release device includes a container for holding particulate porous media which has absorbed a liquid sprout inhibitor. The container is at least partially porous with respect to sprout inhibitor vapors such that the release device may be utilized to inhibit sprouting of potatoes in small packages during shipments. The release device may further be structured to be coated to control the release rate and may further include being printed upon a porous substrate.

Method for releasing sprout suppressant into quantities of potatoes

A method and composition for controlling insects is disclosed. A method and composition are most effective for killing insect populations in enclosed spaces, although direct contact with insects may also be effective. The method involves exposing the insects to 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene for a sufficient period of time to cause death to the same, wherein the insects may then be more readily destroyed. In enclosed spaces which are to be disinfected, a mist or vapor of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene may be diffused into the space with the space sealed for a sufficient period of time to eliminate insects.

Insect control method and composition

A chemical composition and method useful in the treatment of stored potatoes is disclosed. The chemical composition includes a mixture of a substituted naphthalene compound and an odor-neutralizing ingredient. The instant invention also discloses a method for reducing the odor of naturally-occurring or applied substituted naphthalenes. The odor-neutralizing ingredient neutralizes the odor associated with substituted naphthalene compounds.

Composition and method for reducing odor of substituted naphthalenes

A sprout inhibitor for potatoes is introduced into a potato storage facility as a gas phase carried in an air stream. The liquid sprout inhibitor may be heated prior to injection into a flowing air stream or a large surface area of the liquid sprout inhibitor may be exposed to the air stream to induce evaporation of the inhibitor into a gaseous phase. Sprout inhibitors such as dimethylnaphthalene (DMN) and trimethylnaphthalene are especially suitable for introduction to potato storage sheds by thermal fogging or evaporative fogging. A method and composition to promote healing of freshly dug potatoes are further disclosed. Treatment of freshly dug potatoes with DMN either prior to or immediately after storage promotes rapid healing of cuts, abrasions and similar injuries to the potatoes. Stored potatoes first treated with DMN may be later advantageously treated with low levels of CIPC for effective sprout inhibition.

An improved combustion-type fogging apparatus and process for applying herbicides, insecticides and the like, as an aerosol is disclosed herein. The apparatus includes an improved combustion chamber with counter-current flow of combustion and supplemental air along with a stator at the downstream portion of the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber also has a hydrocarbon fuel burner to produce hot gases which along with the combustion air and supplemental air forms a hot gas flow into an aerosol chamber wherein a liquid or molten material is introduced for the purpose of being converted into a stable aerosol or fog for introduction into a storage facility or for other purposes of applying an aerosol of an insecticide, herbicide or other liquid or molten material.

Aerosol generating device

A method of treating potatoes sequentially with chemically-different sprout inhibitors is disclosed. Sprouting of stored potatoes may be eliminated or minimized by a treatment with CIPC followed sometime later by a treatment with a substituted naphthalene such as 1,4-DMN. Also, an initial treatment with 1,4-DMN soon after the potatoes are harvested may be advantageous in addition to the later treatments with CIPC and 1,4-DMN.

Sprout inhibitor method

Techniques for melting and forming aerosols from solid CIPC are disclosed. Solid CIPC in block form is convenient to ship and to handle. Solid CIPC in block form appears to have a consistency of solid paraffin wax. Solid CIPC is melted by controlled techniques to form a substantially pure liquid stream of CIPC. The molten or liquid stream of CIPC is converted to an aerosol of CIPC either by a pressurized, hot air stream or by a combustion gas stream.

Treatment of potato storage facilities with aerosols derived from solid

A method to promote skin healing of freshly dug potatoes is disclosed. Treatment of freshly dug potatoes with DMN either prior to or immediately after storage promotes rapid healing of cuts, abrasions and similar injuries to the potatoes. Liquid DMN may be sprayed on freshly dug potatoes in the field immediately after being dug, during transport from the field, while being conveyed into a storage facility or immediately after being stored. Once in a storage facility, the potatoes may also be treated with a vapor or mist of DMN either in addition to initial treatments or instead of earlier treatments. Further, such DMN treated potatoes may be stored under low humidity conditions without significant dehydration or softening. Stored potatoes first treated with DMN may be later advantageously treated with low levels of CIPC for effective sprout inhibition.
