A thermal cycling method and associated device is described. The method is for carrying out a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) process to amplify deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and the method includes: pre-heating a series of blocks to respective temperatures that correspond to different respective heating stages in a PCR process, in which each block of the series of blocks defines a respective heat transfer surface, in which the series of blocks define a sequence of positions along a path, with each position defined by a respective heat transfer surface of a respective block; and moving a PCR reaction vessel, which contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and PCR reagents, along the path into and out of each respective position in the sequence of positions according to a schedule, in which, at each respective position the PCR reaction vessel is in thermal contact with the respective heat transfer surface to equilibrate a temperature of the PCR reaction vessel to a target temperature that corresponds to a respective heating stage in the PCR process.

A means and method for enabling contact or touch point location detection to be implemented on a particular garment. This means and method simplifies the design of the garment by reducing the number of conductors required to interconnect the various touch points and signal processing circuitry; it provides a way to dynamically reposition or resize the effective touch point target regions; and it provides for new control capabilities by optionally allowing continuously variable user input control.

Resistive loop excitation and readout for touch point detection and generation of corresponding control signals

A system for use in material testing which can be used on non-planar shapes and which is simple and inexpensive in construction. The system includes a layer of piezoelectric material sandwiched between and connected to a unified electrode and a plurality of excitable electrodes; and a structure, such as a Faraday structure-like unit which prevents electric or static fields from getting into or out of the structure and controls voltage potentials contained therein to be uniform, enclosing the ultrasonic transducer unit, and functions by maintaining a voltage potential on the electrodes and the piezoelectric material then pulling to the reference potential selected electrodes to generate a signal which excites the piezoelectric material so it generates a corresponding signal and then measuring the return signal generated by the piezoelectric material in response to a return signal from material being tested in response to the signal generated by the piezoelectric material. The signal generation process can be viewed as being reversed from the process used in the prior art in that the initial signal is generated by the unit of the present invention by pulling an electrode to the reference potential rather than by applying a high voltage pulse to the electrode.

In a nondestructive testing system, a preamplifier is connected to a piezoelectric element and is tuned to optimize the amplitude of a signal input to the piezoelectric element and the shape of a response signal. A receiver amplifier couples the signal received from the piezoelectric element to an ultrasound system.

A system controls and manages administration of a therapeutic gas, such as NO, O, or the like, to a spontaneously breathing, non-ventilated patient such that concentrated NO is as low as reasonably possible while delivering the desired amount of NO to the distal portions of the lungs. The system includes an entrainment cell that provides remote, turbulent mixing with low temporal latency and can be used with a nasal cannula or a mask. The entrainment cell uses room air to dilute the therapeutic gas; however, supplementary gases can also be used. A baffle can be included to promote mixing and a flow sensor can also be used if desired. Multiple ports can be included in the entrainment cell. An equalizing valve is also disclosed.

System and elements for managing therapeutic gas administration to a spontaneously breathing non-ventilated patient

Therapeutic gas, such as NO, is delivered to a patient in accurately controlled amounts by a system that uses a closed loop feedback system in which the amount of therapeutic gas delivered is a precise fraction of the total gas delivered to the patient. Ratiometric feedback is used in the control loop.
