Central vacuum units are provided with a canister having a sidewall forming a hollow interior, a vacuum motor disposed within the hollow interior, an exhaust port in fluid communication with the hollow interior, and an acoustic damping pathway. Examples of the acoustic damping pathway can include a plurality of acoustic damping chambers in fluid communication with each other. In addition or alternatively, the acoustic damping pathway can include an inner acoustic damping chamber and an outer acoustic damping chamber. In addition or alternatively, the acoustic damping pathway can form a serpentine passage from the motor to the exhaust port.

A central vacuum assembly including a vacuum cleaning apparatus, a ventilation apparatus, a heat exchanger for transferring heat energy between air in the vacuum cleaning apparatus and air in the ventilation apparatus. Optionally, a fan for circulating air within the vacuum cleaning apparatus and/or the ventilation apparatus operates in a low speed mode for ventilation and a high speed mode for vacuuming.

Intake tube

A system for adapting the intake configuration of a central vacuum cleaning system is disclosed. The canister of the central vacuum cleaning system is provided with at least two vacuum intake openings from which an installer can choose to insert an intake coupler and at least one intake closure or cap of the present invention. Insertion and attachment of the intake coupler and the cap(s) is achieved by use of a novel twist-to-lock interface provided between the vacuum intake openings and the coupler and cap(s). Attachment of the coupler and the cap(s) is accomplished easily and quickly by hand and without the need for glue, clamps, tools, or any other equipment.
