A preferred embodiment of the housing incorporates an enclosure defining an interior cavity. A thermal bed is supported within the cavity and is configured to retain an optical integrated circuit within the cavity. First and second fiber members also are provided that each include a circuit end for engaging and optically communicating with the optical integrated circuit, and a coupling end for engaging a coupling. Preferably, the couplings are mounted to the enclosure so that an external fiber member can engage a coupling and optically communicate with the optical integrated circuit.

A housing for optical integrated circuits for protecting the circuit from temperature induced stresses has a base and cap and a thermal bed contained therein. The thermal bed has a region for containing the integrated circuit therein, suspended in a thermally conductive grease. At least one heater is affixed to the thermal bed for heating it, and temperature monitoring apparatus is included for supplying signals to a control apparatus for activating the heater when the temperature of the thermal bed falls outside of the operating temperature range.

An optical interconnection device has a passive control mechanism for substantially eliminating thermal effects on optical properties of the apparatus Specifically, the interconnection apparatus includes a control material coupled to an optical circuit substrate, wherein the control material has a thermal expansion coefficient that is different than a substrate thermal expansion coefficient. In response to an increase or decrease an ambient temperature, the control material thermally expands or contracts at a different rate than the substrate to create a non-planar substrate distortion transmitted to the core portion, thereby creating a temperature independent optical path length within the optical core portion.
